Cut City

Cut City formed in 2002 around the local Deleted Art label, sort of the swedish counter-part to U.S. art-punk imprints like Three One G and Tapes Records. In May 2005 they issued a 4-song EP on the california-based Gold Standard Labs label, home to such acts as The Locust, Year Future, Gogogo Airheart and many more. Drawing comparisons to groups such as Echo & The Bunnymen and Joy Division as well as newer bands like Moving Units and Franz Ferdinand they at the same time echo the past as much as the future. In February 2007, Cut City released their debut full-length, Exit Decades, through Gold Standard Labs. Following that the band ventured on a european tour in March.

Exit Decades is the effigy of tomorrow burned today. Blazing and roaring it unveils the disparate notions of uncertain caring and common disillusion that propels all life. It embraces the cultural bombs as they're dropped on someone's recluse home. As an objet d'art it pulls the rug from under an abandoned playground; a digital ephemera hailing inconsistencies and contradictions.

Despite much of similarity with the bands such as Interpol and Editors, Cut City still preserves enough flavor to be listened and enjoyed. Recommended!

Winterpills

Dennis Crommett (guitar), Dave Hower (drums), Philip Price (vocals/guitar), and Flora Reed (vocals/keyboards) create the haunting melodies of Winterpills. The Northampton, MA, quartet initially came together in winter 2003; Crommett and Price, whose résumés include time spent playing with Spanish for Hitchhiking and the Maggies respectively, were looking to expand their acoustic jam sessions into something bigger, thus bringing on Hower (Spanish for Hitchhiking, the Fucking Sparklies, the Neilds). Folkie singer/songwriter Reed, who made her solo debut with 2002's Settle Down, joined in early 2004, making Winterpills official. Their self-titled debut for Signature Sounds arrived in 2005, and press outlets such as NPR's Weekend Edition and XM Radio's The Loft championed the Winterpills' dreamy, delicate indie rock stylings. Shows with the likes of Erin McKeown, the Mountain Goats, Jesse Sykes & the Sweet Hereafter, and Martha Wainwright also rounded out the band's promotion for Winterpills. Their second offering for Signature Sounds, The Light Divides, is slated for February 2007.

When Winterpills released their debut album in the fall of 2005, fans and critics alike scrambled to define what made it one of most significant musical discoveries of the year. Critics met the album with descriptions like “Heavy with moments of sheer beauty”, “exquisite vocals”, “deeply moving…heartrending”, and “as textured as the best indie rock around.” Fans put the album in the Top 100 on iTunes and Amazon.com and made Winterpills a most requested band on radio stations across the country. A feature on NPR’s Weekend Edition followed along with performances on syndicated radio shows World Café, Mountain Stage and others.

The Light Divides is a bittersweet breakthrough collection of songs that resoundingly delivers on the promise of the band’s debut. While the last album was recorded in singer/keyboardist Flora Reed’s home, The Light Divides is a true studio effort that opens up the band’s sound into an even more expansive palette, with richer colors and vibrant hues. “Our original idea for the first album was to casually record some demos at my house, but before we knew it we were making a full-length record,” says Reed. “We were able to go a lot further with this one. You’ll find some unexpected arrangements and more backwards guitar than you might expect to hear from us. There’s a lot you won’t catch on initial listens that hopefully, will tap you on the shoulder later.” Highly Recommended!

Mumm-Ra

Mumm-ra are an English indie rock band originating from Bexhill on Sea. They rose to public attention first when they performed with the NME awards tour alongside the Automatic, The View and The Horrors. They received further acclaim and publicity thanks to NME, who many argue they owe much of their success to after being featured in the January 2007 edition of the magazine as one of ten bands who were "guaranteed to soundtrack" 2007. They also recieved early airplay thanks to Dermot O'Leary and his BBC Radio 2 show. They have been quoted that music was their only way to esape from the closed community of Bexhill on Sea, an increasingly common scenario with many newly emerging British bands. Despite this, several references to Bexhill on Sea are made in their lyrics and the band seem quietly proud of their heritage. An amusing note is that the band appear relatively casual and almost indifferent when questioned in interviews about the possibility of playing at Glastonbury, but when their hometowns 600 capacity De la Warr pavillion is mentioned, they show a considerable amount more excitement. Their name originates from the main villain of the 1980s cartoon, Thundercats.

In 2006 Mumm-Ra released Bluck Hurts Day And The Night Rolls On (EP) and Out Of The Question (single). Mumm-Ra have announced details of the release of a new single, She's Got You High, for May 14th 2007. The single will be available on CD, featuring previously unreleased tracks indiscreet, and Song E. There are also, as is now traditional- 2 colored vinyl 7"s, featuring a live version of Out Of The Question taken from the bands recent slot on the NME Awards tour. and There She Is (acoustic version). She's Got You High will be followed at the end of May (28th) by the album These Things Move In Threes. Highly Recommended!

Good Shoes

Good Shoes is an emerging English indie pop band, hailing from Morden, London. The four-piece are becoming well known for their upbeat, technical guitar pop, characterised by their three singles to date. The band is made up of Rhys Jones (Vocals, Guitar), Steve Leach (Guitar), Joel Cox (Bass Guitar) and Tom Jones (Drums). The band have drawn comparisons with both modern bands (The Futureheads for example) and "classic" bands (such as The Jam and The Buzzcocks). What has been particularly remarked upon about the band are the unique vocals of Rhys Jones, producing a clear sound for the band.

Good Shoes were formed by lead singer Rhys Jones and guitarist Steve Leach, and often wrote and played music together as a hobby. Rhys and Steve appeared as a two piece under the good shoes name for a friends charity gig (Tom-Fest) at a venue in Kingston called The Peel in early January 2004. Eventually, they decided to formalise their hobby into a fully-fledged band, bringing in Rhys's brother Tom and then later Joel Cox (who was friends with Rhys and Steve from secondary school - Raynes Park High School).

The band's first single "Small Town Girl" was released in 2005, which garnered them a session on Xfm. This was released before the band had signed a proper deal and was released independently through Young And Lost Club Records. 2006 was the band's breakthrough year, with an EP called "We Are Not The Same" and then their first full single "All In My Head" released to critical acclaim (not to mention mentions in NME Magazine) and an appearance on the Carling Stage at the Reading and Leeds Festivals which led to their first TV appearance on the BBC2 festival coverage. They set up a competition for 300 people to get a picture on their next single "The Photos On My Wall"; this became their first single to enter the UK Singles Chart, entering at number 48 on 6 January 2007. The latest single by the band managed to get to number 34 in the U.K Top 40

The band travelled to Malmö, Sweden to record their first album, called Think Before You Speak, with Per Sunding at Tambourine Studios, released at 26th of March 2007. Highly Recommended!

The Antlers

At only 21 years old, this is Peter Silberman's 5th release, though only his second under The Antlers moniker. After moving to Manhattan last year, he set up a cramped, make-shift recording studio in his apartment and set to work on what would become The Antlers' first proper LP, "Uprooted", a different sort of take on the transplant album, exploring claustrophobia and sleepwalking against a fuzz-folk backdrop.

He spent 2006 performing throughout his new home in support of the album, and in the fall of 2006, sprawled his equipment on the floor and set to work on "In The Attic of The Universe", a concept-EP in which he ups the instrumentation from the acoustic guitar that dominated "Uprooted", introducing a full rhythm section, moog, accordion, and piano (both traditional and toy) and a host of others, while parts of the album were recorded outside the farmhouse he grew up on with an old Sony shoebox tape-recorder. The result is a sound revolving around swelling ambience and climactic explosions in the vein of The Arcade Fire and Sigur Ros, alongside Silberman's voice, a sort of cross between Jeff Mangum and Jeff Buckley. Highly Recommended!

Saturna - New Album...

After making quite a good impression with their debut EP ...All Night, Saturna, a space-rock trio from Portland, is back with their first full length record entitled "Some Delicious Enemy". The record contains ten songs and is supposed to be released later this year. A sneak preview of the new material reveals the band in a recognizable mood - fuzzy guitars, melancholic vocals, occasional use of electronic samples and acoustic sounds, all-in-all a musically rich and very compact album. The album includes five new songs combined with the songs already featured on the last year's EP. The new songs posses the same spirit as the old ones, so if you liked '...All Night' you'll enjoy the new songs as well.

It's great that Saturna finally releases the new album. It will be an exciting journey for all Saturna's fans and all the others who're willing to join. Certainly, it will be a big step forward in the development of the band who deserves much more attention than it has it now. Recommended!

Ladyhawk

Ladyhawk awakens in a trash-filled, "morning after" apartment in East Vancouver, British Columbia. Duffy, Darcy, Sean, and Ryan arise, pick up their instruments and head out into the heathen city, singing songs about life and love. They are rockers and dreamers -- still trapped in their apple country teenage minds, looking for girls and kicks, and mining their teenage quarries from the inside-out. Growing up together as the best of friends, Ladyhawk have stories that radiate with the presence of all four members. Their self-titled debut on Jagjaguwar is a stomping and sweaty ride through the Vancouver streets that they all know well, as viewed from the seats of a bruised and doorless Astro Van. In this ride, you can't help but feel that you will fall out and you will fall down, and your joints will all be sore at the end of the trip.

Ladyhawk's core is bracing rock. Neil Young's Tonight's The Night is the hailstorm on the hood of The Replacements Let It Be, while distorted guitars invoke the thread and swerve of Silkworm and Dinosaur Jr. Helped along the way by Amber Webber (vocals) and Josh Wells (percussion, organ, singing) of Black Mountain, it will be hard to find a more hauntingly beautiful set of rock music than this debut. It was recorded and mixed, with the help of Black Mountaineers Wells and Matthew Camirand, in the "Karachi Vice" clubhouse, in the back of a furniture factory, amongst chicken and fish processing plants. With some of the more "inexpensive" ladies of the night scattered about, it captures the bottlenecked frenzy of their much-loved live show. There, each night, these grown-up kids at heart fall over, get right back up, cry on shoulders and fold the day in halves, watching the sun come up over the dashboard.

Following a series of triumphant performances at SXSW, the guys in Vancouver's Ladyhawk are taking their incendiary live show on the road. The first leg of the tour finds them teaming up with Constantines for some pure rock 'n' roll nights throughout Central and Western Canada. Soon after the completion of the Cons/'Hawk extravaganza, Ladyhawk hooks up with Tapes N' Tapes to cut a swathe across the U.S.

While fans of Ladyhawk's debut will be pleased to know those songs still form the crux of Ladyhawk's performance, what makes these shows so exciting is that it's a chance to hear songs from the band's upcoming (release date: May 22) six-song EP, "Fight For Anarchy", as well as from their as yet unnamed second album. Due out in spring 2008, the new disc was recorded by Colin Stewart (Black Mountain, Pink Mountaintops, Lightning Dust, etc). It may seem like a long way off, but time flies and excitement's in the air.

Ra Ra Riot

Six-piece chamber pop/indie rock band Ra Ra Riot formed while their members were attending college in Syracuse, NY. The lineup includes Milo Bonacci (guitar), Alexandra Lawn (cello), Wesley Miles (keyboard/vocals), John Pike (drums), Mathieu Santos (bass), and Rebecca Zeller (violin). Less than a year after forming in January 2006, the band was playing shows with the Horrors, Bow Wow Wow, and Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin.

Mixing the classical backgrounds of both Rebecca and Alexandra (violin and cello respectively) with the driving drums, guitar, bass and vocals of the boys, their sound is catchy, upbeat, and more than worthy of a good head-bop and toe-tap. The group knocked out six shows last fall at the CMJ Music Marathon and NME named them one of the 'hot five' bands of CMJ.

Not unlike Arcade Fire, this talented young bunch has an epic approach to indie rock. Driven by exuberant string and rhythm sections, band members play each note to they fullest as they bounce around stage (as if it was their last show ever). The band recently released self-titled EP "Each Year". Highly Recommended!

Laura Veirs

Seattle singer/songwriter Laura Veirs sings personal songs of romantic intoxication, everyday vignettes, and occasional social commentary that are often heavy on introspection and intense character scrutiny. Her vocals and melodies rapidly shift and veer, true to her name, up and down her wide vocal range. She put out her own self-titled CD, recorded live and featuring just her and guitar, in 1999. Though she went to the studio for her next album, The Triumphs & Travails of Orphan Mae, it too was self-released (though it saw greater distribution after British label Bella Union decided to reissue it in 2005). 2003 brought the release of Troubled by the Fire, a full-band effort that found the artist sharing the studio with such luminaries as Bill Frisell, Amy Denio, and Fred Chalenor. She signed to Nonesuch the following year and recorded the atmospheric follow-up Carbon Glacier. Year of Meteors followed in August of 2005.

On her third Nonesuch release, Saltbreakers, singer-songwriter Laura Veirs remains tantalized by the mysteries and marvels of the natural world, filling her work with images, both precise and poetic, of the ocean and the stars. But she digs even deeper this time into the vagaries of human nature, transforming the turbulence of her own life, as well as her concerns about the hair-trigger state of the world at large, into a collection of songs distinguished as much by their emotional urgency as by their often astonishing musical inventiveness. Recommended!

Louis

A number of years ago, spinART released a record by Regia called The Art of Navigation. It was something else: a slice of vulnerable, honest bedroom pop that bordered on the epic without ever getting maudlin. It was an album that felt instantly personal. Regia was the brainchild of Louis Schefano, a New York-via-Athens, GA-via Birmingham journeyman drummer and sideman who’d played with Little Red Rocket (soon to become Azure Ray) and Remy Zero. Truly one of the lost gems of the turn of the century.

Louis Schefano is back, this time simply as Louis. His new EP is called Freak Show Revenge and it’s wonderful...a little more lo-fi, a little more insular, and just as stirring. Recommended!
