Top Ten 2005

It's the end of the year and here is my top ten selection for 2005.

10. Sigur Ros - Takk

A story told from the first to the last song. Simply an unique and a beautiful release.

09. Editors - Back Room

Someone would say it's not original, we've heard that with Joy Division, Interpol or even Depeche Mode. But is it good? Hell yes. It's one of my favorites in 2005.

08. Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake It's Morning

Conor Oberst worked hard in this year. Two full-length albums, one live album and a number of collaborations with other artists. This album is the Bright Eyes best release up to now, compact and powerful.

07. Devendra Banhart - Cripple Crow

Devendra Banhart has already established himself as the one of the most important figures in the so-called freak-folk community. With the Cripple Crow his arrogance is obvious, he's self-assured more than ever delivering probably his best album up to now.

06. M.I.A. - Arular

One of the most exciting surprises in the past year. Sri-Lankan born hip-hop singer collaborating with the well-established figure in the world of electronic music - Diplo (Diplomats), delivered highly praised release that one must have.

05. Decemberists - Picaresque

Decemberists have a number of releases behind them. This one is certainly their most complete release, the one that shows the maturity of the band and their music.

04. Antony & The Johnsons - I Am A Bird Now

With this album A&J won the Mercury prize. Strongly filled with emotions and beautiful sounds this album is the must for everyone.

03. My Morning Jacket - Z

This albums is the highlight in the work of My Morning Jacket. It's a gem, a piece of art that would be hard to repeat.

02. Franz Ferdinand - You Could Have It So Much Better

This album is so good that I afraid that it may turn to mainstream. Franz Ferdinand have fulfilled the expectations and confirmed that they rule the new brit-rock scene.

01. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - Clap Your Hands Say Yeah

When the band delivers something really unique that comes from their own kitchen and it's really refreshing and good, then it deserves to hit the top of the list. CYHSY are definitely my top choice for this year and I recommend it highly.

Some other releasess worth listening:
Sleater-Kinney - The Woods
The Hold Steady - Separation Sunday
Sufjan Stevens - Illinois
The New Pornographers - Twin Cinema
Babyshambles - Down In Albion
The White Stripes - Get Behind Me Satan
The Magic Numbers - The Magic Numbers
Art Brut - Bang Bang R'n'R
Okkervill River - Black Sheep Boy
Caesars - Paper Tigers
LCD Soundsystem - LCD Soundsystem
The Tears - Here Come The Tears
The Capes - Hello
Wolf Parade - Apologies To The Queen Mary
Broken Social Scene - Broken Social Scene
Stars - Set Yourself On Fire
Metric - Live It Out
Mew - And The Glass Handed Kites

I expected more from (black list):
Billy Corgan - The Future Embrace
Adam Green - Gemstones
Oasis - Don't Believe The Truth

Keep your eyes on:
The Strokes - First Impressions Of The Earth
Arctic Monkeys - Whatever People Say I Am ...

I wish to all of you Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I hope to get some more interaction with you in the next year. That's why I would invite you to participate more in the further development of this page by leaving comments, discussing music, etc. Have nice holidays, make love.

Great blog! Thanks for sharing your thoughts (not to mention all of the ODs). I'm a regular visitor and big fan, and I'll try to comment more actively in the coming year.

M.I.A, LCD Soundsystem and Sigur Ros were all big faves of mine this year, too. I'd also throw in Black Rebel Motorcycle Club's "Howl," Beck's "Guero" and Moby's "Hotel." Oh, and yeah, that new Strokes album is definitely growing on me.

Peace.

I was so silly to leave the canadians out from my list but that's what happens when you do the summary a day before your holidays :)

Anyway I added my favorites in the list along with the excellent belgians (Mew) that I missed as well. Probably there are still some of the good ones missing but it would be impossible to put them all here.

Thanks for your comments. Have a nice New Year's party.

like the list. i think 03-04 were better for music, i got spoiled and expected everyone to have totally amazingly dumbfoundingly great releases, and while there were some of those, a lot of it was...not bad, just not...stupefyingly great. i got spoiled. i think 06 will be better, all the bands that skipped this year (arcade fire, modest mouse, blah blah) will be releasing new stuff.

I expected more from
Billy Corgan - The Future Embrace

How could you expect anything from Billy Corgan.
Wow, how old are you like 13?
Billy Corgan?
I just have to question your taste in music with the idea you thought that might be a good album!
Yeah you got the usual suspects on your list. (Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Decemberists - Picaresque, Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake It's Morning)
And then you got this.
Franz Ferdinand - You Could Have It So Much Better at #2.
Lets hear it for marginal bands.
M.I.A. - Arular at #6. Keep on dancing.
Oh you so love the Indie rap dance shitfest that is M.I.A.
Sigur Ros - Takk #10
I so love that fake language they were kicking.
Question for Sigur Ros-How about you offer up a insrumental version of all your albums then I might care

Good luck next year.
