The Boats
The Boats are an experimental indie rock band from Melbourne, Australia.
The story of the band is following …a jam on a cool autumn night in May 2003, between two old friends and two prospective drummers. Paul Guseli [ Front of Van] turned up in his xf panel van, head-shaved and stocked with beer and lovely vintage drums, not to mention the knack for telling a good story or two! Less than 15 minutes into the jam, Jona Byron [ The Dirty Royals, The Waiting Place ] and Nick Conolly [ Miasma, The Daze, Royalchord, The Waiting Place ] knew that this was the birth of something special. The next 6 months saw the band work on improvisational material, combining structured songs with spontaneous jams - this was to become a trademark sound for The boats. Some of these moments were compiled into a demo-ep. Despite the lo-fi sonic quality, the CD received favourable airplay on RRR and PBS FM.
The Boats played their first show at Good Morning Captain in Melbourne, with long improvised jams that captured the ears and curiosity of many punters. However, it was the Museum show with Seascapes of the Interior & Chris Cobilis (The Tigers) that developed the band’s reputation as a new, unique and dynamic force. This paved the way for higher profile shows including a packed EP launch with Black Cab at The Tote, at which one punter aptly described them as “…the band who should have written the soundtrack to Surf Nazis Must Die”.
The Boats conjure up moments of Mogwai, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Ennio Morricone, Set Fire to Flames, The Necks and The Dirty Three… all the while remaining truly unique in their delivery.
The Boats released the EP Perennial Love as an intro to a full-length debut. The EP will be available in limited numbers at live shows or as DRM free mp3 downloads from bigrigrecords.net. It is also being distributed globally as a digital release and will be available through most commercial online digital music retailers from November.
