Joan As Police Woman

Joan As Police Woman is the solo project of superfoxxx and indie rock icon Joan Wasser. She changed the profile of the violin in rock music and now extends this innovative strength to singing and song writing. Joan, a groundbreaking artist who defies easy classification, is a rock-jazz-punk-folk-soul-r-singer, songwriter, keyboardist, guitarist and violinist. Her voice, songs and stage presence have garnered comparisons to Nina Simone, Dusty Springfield, Prince and Chrissie Hynde -- but comparisons will never do justice to her unique voice and brazen attitude. Wasser's spare and dynamic arrangements are complimented by poetic, emotional lyrics sung at one moment in a deep throaty swoon and the next in a high wail. Joan leads her trio on guitar and wurlitzer accompanied by Rainy Orteca on bass and Ben Perowsky on drums.

She took up the violin when she was 8 and began to burn through the classical scene and was quite possibly the first and last to lead her youth orchestra with a platinum mohawk. While studying classical music in college, her love for Mahler and Shostakovich opened her mind to the fact that the violin was not only good for fluffy ornamentation. From there distortion pedals entered her life. Beginning in the historic '90s, Joan was in The Lotus Eaters, The Dambuilders, Those Bastard Souls, Mind Science Of The Mind and Black Beetle. After many major label and indie releases and much national and international touring as a violinist, she started Black Beetle as a songwriter and frontwoman. This led to spots on MTV's "You Hear It First" and VH1.

Joan has recorded and/ or played live with Sheryl Crow, Lou Reed, Tanya Donnelly, Nick Cave, Soul Asylum, Sebadoh, Helium, Laurie Anderson, Sparklehorse, Juliana Hatfield, Shudder to Think, David Gahan, Scissor Sisters, Antony and the Johnsons, Joseph Arthur, The Elevator Drops, Fan Modine, Adam Green, Sex Mob, Weezer, Elton John, Mary Timony, Rufus Wainwright, MMW, Cardigans, Mascott, Angela Mcklusky, The Grifters, played for the Dalai Lama, did Lollapolooza, Montreal Jazz Fest, Conan O'Brien, Jimmy Kimmel, Letterman and The Late Late Show.

In 2000, she began playing solo shows and experienced the sheer joy of musical autonomy which prompted JOAN AS POLICE WOMAN in 2002, named after the '70s TV series "Police Woman" starring Angie Dickenson as an undercover cop. Joan recently opened solo for Rufus Wainwright and Joseph Arthur's national and international tours, playing such prestigious venues as the Beacon Theatre in New York and The Fillmore in San Francisco. This past summer, she was the musical director for Hal Willner's Neil Young Tribute in Prospect Park which drew 15,000 people.

Her JxAxPxWx trio performed a sold-out EP release at Joe's Pub and continues to rock NYC at Tonic, Fez, and Bowery Ballroom. In June 2004, she recorded a critically acclaimed EP with producer Bryce Goggin (The Lemonheads, Pavement, Spacehogg) which the Boston Globe described as "gentle, pulsing, discordant, sexy, strident and soothing". Joan is currently recording a full length album with Mr.Goggin which will be released this year. The new record (called Real Life) features Antony and also Joseph Arthur on a bunch of tracks.
