Clap Your Hands Say Yeah + Okkervil River

There is a buzz created recently around the Clap Your Hands Say Yeah self-titled and self-released album that is similiar to those of Arcade Fire's Funeral in the last year. I took some time to listen to the songs from this album and my first impressions were quite positive. I could say it's a damn good album, but compared to Funeral it misses a bit of an emotion and diversity that made the Arcade Fire so great. Nevertheless it's worth having it and I can recommend it to everyone.

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - S/T | 2

The Okkervil River band's name comes from an obscure Russian story and the album title comes from a song by fallen '60s folk hero Tim Hardin, but the haunting music here is purely the Austin collective's own. Like tour partners the Decemberists and soul mate Alasdair Roberts, Okkervil River deals primarily in dark string instruments and even darker poetry.

Butterfly Boucher + Eisley + KEXP Selection

OK. You've listened to all those girls bands playing soft and hard rock, you liked female artist like PJ Harvey, bands like Rilo Kiley, etc. So now is the time to meet the Butterfly Boucher.

Born in the middle of a seven-daughter family with creative and free-spirited parents, Butterfly Boucher's first name was suggested by some divine intervention her mother was experiencing. A picture on an elementary school wall, a print on a dance teacher's leotard, and a 45rpm single of "The Butterfly Song," brought home by one of her other daughters, all pointed to the name. Her father had pursued a professional career in music but when that failed, all their possessions were given away and the family piled into the car and traveled to Australia's outback. Things settled down, but the wandering spirit stuck with Butterfly. Since most of her young friends had little interest in creating music, Butterfly was left to play all the instruments herself when she started experimenting with a four-track recorder at the age of ten. She later joined her sister's band, the Mercy Bell, on bass, but when a record deal fell through some of the siblings headed to Europe to form a busking "street theater" group. A friend and fellow musician Mike Dixon appreciated Butterfly's stage presence and talent and suggested she try a solo career. Spending every bit of money she had, Butterfly bought a laptop for recording and headed to Stockton, England to refine her writing and playing. She recorded demos, playing every instrument once again, and through Dixon's connections in the business, she ended up with a contract with A&M records. The fully realized demos didn't need much added to them, and appeared mostly untouched on her debut, Flutterby, released in late 2003. ~ David Jeffries, All Music Guide

Eisley makes one of the most impressive, entertaining and instantly accessible full-length album debuts in recent memories with Room Noises. With guitar pop-rock from three sisters, their brother and a best friend, most still teenagers, Room Noises justifies what the buzz is about-the future.

Iron & Wine

Sam Beam lives in Miami, FL and makes music under the name Iron and Wine. He is a father of two (both daughters) and teaches cinematography at a local college. September 2002 saw the release of his debut album, The Creek Drank the Cradle. That record was/is hushed, literate, intimate, melodic: a quiet treasure which, with its unaffected candor and depth, found fans all over. (Entertainment Weekly: "Based in Miami, of all places, [Beam] launches balloons of sweetly whispered regret over trance-inducing backwoods string arrangements and watches them float away, his heart in tow." The Onion: "Equally assured with sweetly lilting pop and doomstruck ballads, Beam invests these songs with hypnotic beauty and sparkling melody, making them as accessible as they are affecting.") Both in the bio for the first record and in (perhaps an unwitting, self-fulfilling prophecy set in motion by that bio…) subsequent press surrounding the record, a fair amount of focus has been narrowed on these two facts: Sam Beam lives in Miami, and most of his music is home-recorded. This lends some interesting context, but really, these things are solely that: context. The simple explanation is that Sam likes the warm weather and home is where the four-track is (it also happens to be where his family is).

In September of 2003, we at Sub Pop released a 5-song EP culled from the recordings that made up The Creek Drank the Cradle as The Sea and The Rhythm. And, some discerned a new undercurrent of optimism within these (Pitchfork: "...Beam pushes trembling expectation, ecstatic abandon, and plain-faced repentance"). Between now and the first record, Sam spent a far amount of time on the road, both solo (touring together with Rosie Thomas, Love as Laughter’s Sam Jayne, and James Mercer from The Shins) and with a band. Iron and Wine have played or toured with Holopaw, Broadcast, The Shins, Ugly Casanova, The Decemberists, Fruit Bats, and others.

Our Endless Numbered Days
is the second full-length album from Iron and Wine and it was recorded both at Sam's Miami home and in Chicago's Engine Studios with Brian Deck (Red Red Meat, Modest Mouse, Ugly Casanova, Holopaw, etc.) On it, Sam is aided and abetted by his regular touring and recording conspirators: sister Sara Beam, Patrick McKinney, Jeff McGriff, EJ Holowicki, and Jonathan Bradley. No grand gestures here, instead the record is filled with tiny moments, little windows into our shared mortality in a way that serves to sharpen the hunger for love and connection over time rather than dull or defeat it. Listening to Our Endless Numbered Days makes plain Sam's deft touch with words and melody; one that allows him to turn out stories about love, loss, faith, or the lack of it that are at once personal and universal, set to music that is sweetly haunting and timeless.
