Irene

Irene grew into a full scale band quite spontaneously in 2005. The members are all friends from the local pub in Göteborg, Sweden. Some songs that Tobias Isaksson (aka Bobby) had written just couldn't wait to be performed live. The people that did the first show had so much fun that they wanted to stick around. By the autumn of 2005 Irene was an octet with semi-permanent members. Shortly after that the record label Labrador signed the band.

A critically acclaimed debut album called Apple Bay was released in 2006. It was an upbeat, super-short, 24 minute tribute to the 60's sound with most instruments recorded live. Apple Bay has been licensed in The USA, Australia, Thailand and Taiwan and distributed via Labrador's associates in countries all over the world. In the spring 2007 tours of England, France, Spain and Germany made Irene aspire to take their music to a new level. The result was an almost perfectly executed, timeless pop trip of 27 minutes titled Long Gone Since Last Summer. Although the album is due in Sweden less than one year after the debut it displays a band with brand new qualities. The members of Irene remain beach crooners, lounge punks and next door nice guys. Recommended!

Sebastian Waldejer

Sebastian Waldejer is a 22 year old, singer/songwriter from Stavanger, Norway, with a relaxing sound ranging from melancholic hymns to upbeat alternative pop songs.

Sebastian is a good representative for the new poprock generation that is developing in Stavanger. Starting off with a support-gig at Checkpoint Charlie club in 2005, he has already released "Porcelain baby EP" on his own small label, and done around 30 shows, including support for Marit Larsen, Teitur, and a solo club gig in London last summer. Sebastian Waldejer w/band went on a 4 gig tour in Germany, March 2007, supported by STAR (Stavanger Rock). Waldejer's Porcelain Baby EP was critically acclaimed locally with 5/6 in Rogalands newspaper. 6/6 stars in www.nordische-musik.de " A great songwriter, with a great voice " is a well used description of him in his press reviews. The single (2 songs) "Touch of Soul" is being released online 1st of August 2007 with a music video. Check It Out!

Los Campesinos!

Los Campesinos! are a seven piece indie pop band from Cardiff, Wales. "Los Campesinos" roughly translates as "The Peasants" in Spanish. The group came together at university in 2006, originally consisting of Neil on guitar, Ellen on bass guitar, and Ollie on drums. In March 2006, Tom joined the band, assuming the role of lead guitarist and songwriter, later followed by Gareth on vocals and glockenspiel, Harriet on violin and keyboard, and finally Aleks on vocals and keyboards.

The band performed their first gig on 8 May 2006, and went on to play a number of increasingly well-received gigs around Cardiff. An early demo was recorded featuring the songs "Death To Los Campesinos!", "It Started With A Mixx", "Sweet Dreams Sweet Cheeks", and live favourite "You! Me! Dancing!". The songs were posted on the internet, bolstering the popularity established by their energetic live shows and earning them airplay on Beth & Huw's evening show on BBC Radio 1 Wales. The band's reputation continued to grow, and in August 2006 landed them a slot supporting Canadian supergroup Broken Social Scene.

In November 2006, the band were signed by Wichita Recordings, who put out their first single on 26 February 2007, a double A-side featuring new songs "We Throw Parties, You Throw Knives" and "Don't Tell Me To Do The Math(s)". In April the band signed to Canadian label Arts & Crafts for Canadian and North American releases. In June 2007 the band released "You! Me! Dancing!" on limited edition 7" coloured vinyl, accompanied by a handful of dates playing Bath, Newport, Cardiff and London. The EP Sticking Fingers Into Sockets was released on 3 July on Arts & Crafts, produced by Broken Social Scene collaborator Dave Newfeld. The band will be embarking on their first full UK tour in October, preceded by a new single. The as-yet untitled debut album is expected early 2008. Highly Recommended!

Battles

Battles is an American math rock band. Following a string of EPs, the band released their debut album on the Warp Records label in February 2006, which was titled EP C / B EP. It is a compilation of their increasingly hard-to-find early releases, EP C and B EP. The group's line-up is composed of well-known musicians, including ex-Helmet drummer John Stanier, ex-Don Caballero guitarist Ian Williams, ex-Lynx guitarist Dave Konopka, and Tyondai Braxton (son of avant-garde jazz musician Anthony Braxton), who also plays guitar and keyboard and creates live voice samples.

Their first full-length album Mirrored, recorded by Keith Souza at Machines with Magnets, was released on May 14, 2007. The first single from the album, "Atlas", was released on February 21, 2007 as streaming audio, and the accompanying streaming video was released on February 28, 2007.

Recently the single "Atlas" was voted "Best Single of the Week" by NME magazine, and received a glowing review in the British Clash Magazine, where comparisons were made to Glitter Beat. Battles scored their first UK cover feature in May 2007, talking to Plan B Magzine about the making of Mirrored.

Donny Hue And The Colors

Donny Hue is not from these parts. He came here to help his friend Ed, who was interested in the study of losing one's mind. Their friendship was forged quickly, frolicking on the interstate, building trees, and thinking as little as humanly possible.

One day, Ed fell into a hole in the ground. Donny was frightened, but knew he couldn't leave his friend stranded, so he jumped! He fell for a real long time.

Darkness followed.

When he awoke he found himself in an underground world. Organs, autoharps, melodicas, glockenspiels, and theremins cluttered the floor around him. Donny searched high and low, but Ed was nowhere to be found.

Devastated that he had lost his best friend and was trapped in this godforsaken place, Donny fell into a deep depression. Every day he drew pictures of a time and place where he and his friend climbed mountains of glass, laughed at giant clocks, and dug tiny holes in their hearts.

Through these pictures he began to find hope, and vowed to create a world of such magnificence that it would be a beacon for Ed to find his way home. He called this world the wunderground, and invited his not-so-ordinary friends (the Colors) to help create the siren sounds that might bring Ed back.

Together they have created the collection of songs you are holding: lush, magisterial lullabies, shimmering chamber pop, psychedelic nursery rhymes gone horribly awry, and ghostly, incandescent dreamscapes.

After honing his skills as a keyboard player in Meredith Bragg and The Terminals, Donny Hue recruited his not-so-ordinary friends (the Colors) to help create his own vision. The group made their way down south from Washington, DC to record their debut Folkmote. Former Mazarin member Marshall Costan (producer for Nethers, Carlsonics) recorded the album over just one weekend in Richmond, VA at Black Iris Studio.

Fans of those wonderful Elephant 6 bands of yore, Bob Dylan circa 1966, and Syd Barrett may find this collection particularly pleasing. Highly Recommended!

White Rabbits

White Rabbits come to NYC via the arid plains of the Mid West. Although they have been in The City for just over a year, they have managed to catch the attention of Say Hey Records and producer Chris Zane (Shy Child, Asobi Seksu, Les Savy Fav) with their stellar songwriting ability and instrumental aplomb.

Lead by dual vocalists, Greg Roberts (Guitar / Vox) and Steve Patterson (Piano / Vox), the 6 piece is ?rounded out by Alex Even (Guitar / Vox), Adam Russell (Bass), Matt “The Duck” Clark (Drums) and Jamie ?Levinson (Drums). With a certain joie de vive, playfulness and charm White Rabbits thematically evoke ?the more decadent and bygone era of days spent on the green, old cinemas “Tourist Trap”, tragic mothers “Navy Wives”, and restrained, but no less awkward domestic disputes, with the first single, “The Plot.”

Added to their arsenal are 3 part vocal harmonies that texture the album throughout. White Rabbits even showcase the occasional group chant, best exampled on Fort Nightly’s opening track “Kid On My Shoulders” as it thunders to its conclusion. White Rabbits’ penchant for more tropical excursions such as on “I Used To Complain Now I Don’t”, featuring the horns of Beirut’s (Jon Natchez), are, at times, reminiscent of The Specials or Madness.

The band also has a keen ear for the ?occasional cover song, and the old instrument switcheroo on stage. Anyone who has had the chance to see White Rabbits live will be able to attest first hand to the joy and effervescence that they exude on stage. True camaraderie in fact. Their sets have gained the band a large and growing audience and led them to share bills with Peter Bjorn & John, The Walkmen, Richard Swift and others. A full tour is planned for the late spring as well.

White Rabbits have succeeded in realizing a tremendously vibrant and creative debut record with Fort Nightly. They communicate joy without being cloying or saccharine sweet, and the listeners could easily find themselves clapping along to any one of the darker moments. White Rabbits combine style and panache, both musical and personal, for a thoroughly fresh and unexpected experience. This is certainly one to follow ?though the looking glass… Highly Recommended!

The Mabuses

The Mabuses is a band which formed in London in 1991 and released two albums to considerable critical acclaim. Led by the enigmatic Kim Fahy, the Mabuses offer music which mixes pop sensibilities with more esoteric concerns such as film and literature. The name "Mabuses" is a tribute to the Fritz Lang film trilogy about a master criminal called Dr. Mabuse. The sheer profusion of influences in their work made The Mabuses impossible to categorize. Lyrically and musically, the result of their output can only be best described as modern psychedelia.

"The Mabuses is supremely idealistic pop, cut according to the belief that the form should entice, baffle and ruffle rather than provide a readily assimilable template. Fahy's rhythmic/melodic charge is rooted in folk-derived Brit-pop, the kind that typified 1967's psychedelic headcharge, a.k.a Syd Barrett's Pink Floyd and the Soft Machine, with that nursery rhyme loopiness - whimsy and surrealism simultaneously, all strangeness, quark and charm - where nothing is quite as it seems." (Martin Aston - College Music Journal)

The Mabuses, the enigmatic and off-kilter international pop project led by Kim Fahy and a mysterious cast of characters is making its valiant return to the musical scene with Mabused, releasing on the band’s own Magpie Records on September 25, 2007. The band makes a comeback after two albums on Rough Trade nearly a decade ago. The Mabuses’ pop alchemy recalls the work of Andy Partridge, early Beta Band, and the Elephant Six heyday, but its indefinable familiarity and kitchen sink approach to songwriting makes the record a real treat and not one easily shoehorned into traditional “sounds like” press speak.

Mancino

Mancino is one part sonic beast and two parts insecure nerd. From the depths of Brooklyn’s Gowanus Canal, the trio mashes elements of 60’s pop, psyche, circus squawks, and solid rock music into a potent stew that possesses the shy wallflower to boogie and the dancing queen to strap on a pair of headphones and geek out.

This recipe has been simmering over the course of almost four years of blistering live shows in New York as well as throughout much of the U.S.; headlining alongside such regarded acts as Tapes 'n Tapes, The Big Sleep, Plastic Constellations, Sam Champion, Dosh, and many more. Their fiercely inventive live shows have drawn praise from CMJ.com, SPIN Magazine, and many of the universe's most influential bloggers. Mancino's music was most recently featured in the film "First Ascent" (Sender Films) alongside Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, the Rapture and Devotchka, and also appeared in the new MTV show "Band in a Bubble."

Mike Grimes (Vocals, Guitars, Bass) and Nadim Issa (Keyboards, Bass, Vocals) started playing music together as undergraduates at Brown University. Soon after relocating to New York, they crossed paths with French expat Jonathan Mason (Drumset, Vocals, Percussion, Toys) and persuaded him to lend his considerable charms to the burgeoning sounds heretofore confined to terrible cassette recordings of late night bedroom jam sessions. In sweaty and overpriced Midtown rehearsal spaces, the trio began hammering out the blueprint for their signature sound, an idiosyncratic blend of Kinks-esque swagger, Beach Boys harmonies, and muscular rhythms reminiscent of Talking Heads. Inspired by the unorthodox and backwards style of penmanship favored by Leonardo da Vinci, they named the project Mancino. And who are we to argue with Leonardo da Vinci? After all, there is a Ninja Turtle named after him.

After the release of their debut EP (2005) "Dear International," (#2 add on CMJ charts the week of its release, #67 in Top 200), Mancino is proud to release its debut LP, "Manners Matter," which was lovingly engineered by DaSh (Gogol Bordello, Balkan Beat Box), mixed by their very own Nadim Issa, and mastered by Alan Douches (Animal Collective, Danielson, Galaxy 500). Recorded in East Williamsburg, Brooklyn, the boys spent long summer hours bouncing sounds off of the walls and channeling the echoing chants of lingering ghosts in an old industrial warehouse. Then, in the comfort of keyboardist Nadim Issa's apartment, the boys of Mancino spent weeks recording house-pets and vocal overdubs; the seasoning to the band's debut LP.

The first single, Hetchie Hutchie Footchie, which the band self proclaimed to be "The Australian Summer Dance Craze of 1958," has already been the #1 song of the week on WOXY.com while SPIN.com praised the album stating, “Manners Matter shows a band eagerly adopting different genres, and just as easily shrugging them off for the next number. On the experimental scale, these boys show touches of the blithe blending abilities of the Beach Boys and XTC.” Highly Recommended!

Goodbye The Band

Goodbye the Band is an electronics-infused epic pop-rock band in the vein of Fiery Furnaces, Stereolab, Magnetic Fields and Of Montreal. The band is the brainchild of John Acquadro, and includes frequent contributions from vocalist and percussionist Spencer Owen, along with other instrumentation from Michael Ulrich, Jamie Burkart, Fletcher Tucker and Alexandra Ackerman. The emotional range of Goodbye the Band's music is wide, covering the entire spectrum from reflective and nostalgic to hyper and almost psychotically irreverent.

The music has been called "amazing" by Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore and has received praise for its many recording projects at outlets such as Fakejazz and the venerable Demo Universe, which called the band's music "unfailingly superb," and a "favorite" out of thousands and thousands of received releases.

Goodbye the Band's hallmarks are a clear affinity for dynamic-conscious and dense arrangement, an ear for compelling production and, perhaps most obviously, an obsession with melodies operating at both traditional and unusual intervals. While no longer adolescent, Acquadro's teenage fanboy appreciation for the guitar lines of Smiths-era Johnny Marr, the energy of Talking Heads' small riffs and the melodies of vintage They Might Be Giants is spiritually if not modally obvious.

The band released a number of albums, full and EP's, that can be downloaded via their official page. Lately, the band released EP, The Goo of Childhood, that is available for free download. The EP is a good introduction to their upcoming release, The Lion. The album will be released for independent label Pop Oblivion.

Angel And The Love Mongers

Bringing together the seemingly disparate sounds of dark, synthy electro-pop of the 1980s and guitar-based classic rock makes it difficult to put a finger on the sound of Knoxville, Tennessee’s Angel and the Love Mongers. Formed in the spring of 2004 by singer/guitarist Angel Zuniga and drummer Eric Nowinski, Angel and Eric were drawn together due in part to their diverse approach to music.

Angel, who takes many of his musical cues from alternative dance bands of the 80’s, such as Depeche Mode and Erasure, is a former actor and model that confesses to have spent his formative years in front of a mirror practicing his dance moves instead of playing air guitar. Eric, on the other hand, who cut his musical teeth on The Beatles and spent his youth playing air guitar to Queen and Cheap Trick recently gave up his career as a trial lawyer to pursue music. At first glance, this would appear to be a musical mismatch of cosmic proportions. However, this diametrically opposed approach to music is one of the things that allow Angel and the Love Mongers to create such a unique, bracing sound.

Angel and the Love Mongers first album was a collection of 11 catchy alternative/pop songs produced by Don Coffey, Jr., of Superdrag fame. However, for their sophomore effort the band wanted to broaden their musical pallet and therefore sought out the help of legendary artist/producer Mitch Easter. The culmination of this effort is The Humanist Queen, which will be released on September 4, 2007 on Rock Snob Records.

Although The Humanist Queen can be appreciated solely for its lush arrangements, soaring harmony vocals and song craft, it would be a mistake to ignore the lyrics, which sometimes take a dark and abrasive look at the motivating elements of power and control in today’s culture. This oppositional approach to songwriting results in a unique yet somehow indulgent musical canvas that must be heard to be fully appreciated. Other notable musicians who lent their talent to the making of The Humanist Queen include Mitch Easter (Let’s Active) Tim Lee (The Windbreakers and the Tim Lee Band) and Paul Noe (The Judybats). Highly Recommended!

Armstrong?

Armstrong? (yes with interrogative mark) was formed in Turin in the summer of 2005 by guitarist and singer Rob, Marco (drums) and Ste (bass, synth) and their sound is a balance of experimental and dreamy mix.Anyway the heart of their tunes is the melody-effect and their most influences are equally inspired by music and cinematic feel.In early 2006 the band issued a demo simply called promo 2006 and their recordings were sent to some music magazines and got nice reviews.Early the following year, the band got in touch with producer Maurice Andiloro and released their new EP named Me, You And Our Mutual Alibi. A collection of multi-layered guitar sounds meets killer melodic pop and mild electronic suggestions with constant dreamy inclination, intimate spooky lyrics and shoegaze temptations. Me, You And Our Mutual Alibi is a melancholic universe made of fragile but also sweet vocals and heterogeneous moods.Their music sounds just like If Neil Armstrong had been on the moon. The Armstrong? guys were so kind to enable you to download their latest EP via Indie Surfer. Highly Recommended!

Hypertext

From the dark corner of the small underground music sessions in suburb Haugesund, four individuals started their trail toward musical relief in capitol city, Bergen, Norway. Together they challenged sound, rhythm and lyrics, the very definition of modern music. In their own special way, Hypertext mix harmonies and rhythm they enjoy and play it for no other reason than the hunger for playing them. The songs need to be out amongst people. The four minds have no intention of tutoring; just rendering comfortable realization of mutual pleasure.

The music has been characterized as a huge melting pot of different acts such as New York, Art, Punk, Shoegaze, Indie, Lo-Fi, Noise-Pop and Rock. This is not far from the truth. Through catchy guitar-riffs, pulsing rhythms and pure sonic noise, the audience are shown a world where ...and you will know us by the Trail of Dead, Sonic Youth, Interpol and The Strokes shake hands. After several gigs in Norway during 2006, including support-tour with Low Frequency in Stereo, Hypertext is finally done producing their debut-album ”Corrente Elektro”. The album was released in march/april 2007. The rest of the year is dedicated to touring, abroad as well as innland, in an atempt to conquer more hearts and soul with their love for music. Recommended!
