Naama Hillman

Naama Hillman is a Singer/Songwriter based in London. She was born in Israel and grew up in America where her musicality was evident from the very early years, as she studied classical piano before discovering the guitar. Although influenced by artists such as Carole King, Neil Young, Zero 7 & Sarah Mclachlan, Naama's song writing is unique and very much her own.

With “striking melodies and strong lyrical content” (Time Out, London), Naama is no stranger to live performance. She constantly wins over audiences throughout her gigs in London (The Borderline, 12 Bar Club), New York (Arlene’s Grocery, CBGB’s) and Tel Aviv (Camelot).

After spending time in the studio with a small but significant group of collaborators; honing her skills as a songwriter and producer, Naama emerged with the finished product - "Living Room", a CD offering 11 original tracks.

As a follow up to her first album, “Living Room”, Singer/Songwriter Naama Hillman has released an acoustic EP available to download for free from her website. The EP is called “In Between the Lights” and includes 5 acoustic songs, both new and old, including a cover of the Johnny Cash hit, “Ring of Fire”. The idea behind the EP was to capture some of the magic in Naama’s performances and to showcase a more natural sound.

Naama's voice is beautiful, the songs are mellow and emotional, and the acoustic performance is excellent. Recommended!

Frida Hyvönen

For the past 3 years, Frida has been carving a singular path through Sweden, laying to bare with her minimal piano-based songcraft. With a passionate bite and crystal voice, Frida's debut album, Until Death Comes, features a raw home-recording feel similar to the Stones' Beggars Banquet, Joni Mitchell's Blue or Carole King's Tapestry. It's mostly recorded in the legendary Atlantis studio in Stockholm and co-produced with Jari Haapalainen.

Loved in her home country, she's just beginning to peek out into the rest of the world by touring in support of country-mates José Gonzalaz and the Concretes (who originally released Until Death Comes in Scandinavia on their own Licking Fingers imprint).

Frida, who has frequently toured across Europe, will now give America its chance as she traverses the US with fellow-Swede & label-mate, Jens Lekman.

News

Badly Drawn Boy has announced details of his long-awaited new album. After a two-year absence, the singer-songwriter releases Born In The UK on October 23, reports NME.com. The album will be his first for new label EMI, after splitting from XL. Tracks include the Springsteen-inspired title track, Degrees Of Separation, Nothing's Going To Change My Mind, Promises and Times Of Times ...

The Arcade Fire are going to pass on the notion of bringing on an outside producer in to help with its next album. Front man Win Butler posted an update on the band's official site saying his crew will self-produce its follow-up to 2004's self-released Funeral. "After trying to decide if we should work with any producers we kind of realized that we already know how we want things to sound so we should just run after that sound as far as we can and not rely on someone else to guide the good ship Arcade Fire...at least for now." The act's in the midst of recording the album in a church converted into a recording studio in its hometown of Montreal ...

Lily Allen says she only fancies men who are "really tall - or really fat". Lily told the Mirror she's got her eye on England star Peter Crouch and also likes Radio 1 DJ Chris Moyles. "I like a man to look and feel like a man. Maybe it's a protection thing. Typically good-looking guys do nothing for me. In fact, I find it a turn-off." The 21-year-old added: "I only like them if they're really, really tall or really fat. People say it's weird, but that's what I find attractive." Lily is single after splitting from A&R man Seb Chew, she says: "He finished with me and it was really sh*t, but if you're going to have to get dumped there are worse times than when you've got a No 1 single!" ...

Kings of Leon are to release a download-only EP. 'Day Old Belgian Blues' features six live tracks, taken from their 'Youth And Young Manhood' and 'Aha Shake Heartbreak' albums. The tracks were recorded at the AB Box in Brussels in November 2004. The EP is available for download via their official website kingsofleon.com ...

Ben Kweller's put the finishing touches on his next album -- and he plays every note on the record. Kweller joined producer Gil Norton for Ben Kweller, due out Sept. 12. The epynonymous affair follows up 2004's On My Way ...

The Holloways

The Holloways formed in a little place called Nambucca on Holloway Road, north London, back in November 2004. The members are: Alfie Jackson- Vocals, Guitars and Harmonica, Rob Skipper- Vocals, Guitars and Fiddle, Bryn Fowler- Bass & Backing Vocals, Dave Danger- Drums & Egg Shaker.

‘Two Left Feet’ is The Holloways’ first release on TVT Records. Produced by Langer & Winstanley (Elvis Costello, Dexy's Midnight Runners, Madness, Blur) the song (a paean to young love) is built around a typically inspired duel guitar and fiddle riff and accompanied by some lovely Dylan like harmonica. Alfie Jackson sings of being drunk and lonely and that overwhelming late night yearning for someone to bring a little joy into your life.

Having built up a huge and loyal following over the course of last year, the band released their first two singles ‘Generator’ and ‘Happiness and Penniless’ on their own label ‘Sensible Records’. Both received an incredible response: romping to victory on Radio 1 Zane Lowe’s ‘Fresh Meat’, ‘Rebel Play List’ winners on Lamacq BBC 6 Music (twice), plus two John Kennedy XFM sessions.

The Holloways' music style is very typical for the acts coming from G. Britain. If you liked the Libertines then check the Holloways too!

The Horrors are an indie garage punk band from London. The band consist of Faris Badwan (vocals), Tomethy Furse (bass), Joshua Von Grimm (guitar), Coffin Joe (drums) and Spider Webb (organ). The Horrors are young, nice dressed, have fancy haircuts and play hot music. They have released the 7", Sheena Is A Parasite, for the Loog Records. The video for the song was directed by Chris Cunningham. Their second single 'Death At The Chapel' comes out at July, 31th. The rumor says that the band plans the release of a live EP for the Vice Records. Hopefully, we'll here more from the Horrors in the near future. Check them out!

Bound Stems

Chicago's Bound Stems is Dan Fleury (guitar), Bobby Gallivan (vocals, guitar), Janie Porche (vocals, guitar, sampler, violin, etc.), Dan Radzicki (bass, keys, vocals) and Evan Sult (drums, tapes). Fleury, Radz, and Bobby were friends from high school basketball on; Evan arrived from Seattle and Harvey Danger in September 2002. They started writing songs all the time, then playing out, then writing some more, and by the time Janie had completed the transition from friend to roommate to band member, The Logic of Building the Body Plan EP had been released by Flameshovel Records and they were deep into the construction of Appreciation Night, Bound Stems' debut full-length, also on Flameshovel.

Appreciation Night was two years in the making. Now that it is complete, the members of Bound Stems have disengaged their real jobs (high school history teacher, comic book art director, lab tech, hi-tech techs) in favor of their heretofore fake job as a touring band. It's an act of faith consistent with the characters on the record, the architecture of the songs, and the implied narrative arc. It's time to spread the good word. Get excited about counting again.

Two vocals (Bobbie and Janie), excellent guitars and dissonant melodies make the sound of Bound Stems exciting and enjoyable. Having a sneak preview of some songs from their upcoming album, the impression is that Bound Stems will grow big. Appreciation Night will be made available this September on Flameshovel records. Highly Recommended!

The Decemberists - Live On KCRW

Colin Meloy leads the Decemberists, a five-piece outfit whose pop sound has listeners comparing the band with the likes of Neutral Milk Hotel and Belle & Sebastian. Meloy, who hails from Missoula, MT, is the main songwriter for the group. Rounding out the lineup are Ezra Holbrook on drums, Nate Query on upright bass, Jenny Conlee on accordion, and Chris Funk on theremin and pedal steel guitar. Frontman Meloy previously devoted some time to an alternative country group before breaking off to pursue his craft as a singer/songwriter in the city of Portland, a period that eventually led to the Decemberists' formation. He also holds a degree in creative writing. In addition to her duties on the accordion, Conlee also plays piano. Funk is the band's newest member. Before Hush Records released the Decemberists' first album in 2002, the group put out an EP of five tracks. Their full-length debut, Castaways and Cutouts was re-released that same year on the Kill Rock Stars label, and the band began to accumulate a serious fan base. 2003 saw the release of Her Majesty, another fine collection of theatrical indie pop with british folk sensibilities that further cemented their growing reputation as a band to watch. The following year they released the five-part epic EP The Tain, based on the 8th century Irish poem of the same name, followed by their third full-length Picaresque in 2005.

The presented is a live set from KCRW's Morning Becomes Ecletic show that took place in April 21, 2005. Enjoy!

Envelopes

Envelopes are indie-pop outfit from Malmoe, Sweden. The band consists of Henrik Orrling (vocals, guitars, keyboard), Audrey Pic (vocals, guitars, keyboard), Fredrik Berglind-Dehlin (guitars), Filip Ekander (Drums) and Martin Karlsson / Ulf Hglund (Bass).

First Envelopes never saw eachother except for holidays since they were spread other Sweden and France for some obvious convenient reasons related to the hard reality of life. Then they went to Northen Yorkshire in a farm with real animals like horses and pigs. There they rehearsed, recorded new demos, made the Sister in Love video and could admire how everyday was bringing a new light to the famous shit mountain that stood next to their house.

During that time their debut album DEMON was released. First in Uk (august 2005), april 2006 in USA and soon in the rest of Europe (may 2006), and a CD single as well, called FreeJazz, in february 2006. Now Envelopes are recording their new album in Sweden, in the Tambourine studios, the studio of the band Eggstone. Envelopes have just released the limited 12-inch single I Don't Even Know, Remix, available via Rough Trade.

The music of Envelopes is melodic, catchy and poppy. Two vocals sound very interesting, and the melodies are very nice. One can feel the influence of Pixies in their songs. Recommended for all the fans of the Unicorns, Architecture In Helsinki, Figurines and Pixies.

The Research

The Research is a pop band from Wakefield, United Kingdom. The members are: Russell 'The Disaster' (vocals/keyboards), Georgia (bass/vocals), and Sarah (drums/vocals). Their songs - typically about themes of love, loss and fear - are notable for their plaintive lyrics, vocal harmonies, and use of a synthesizer in place of a guitar.

The Research started in the Spring of 2003. The first song they wrote, “She’s Not Leaving”, was released on At Large Recordings in November 2004. Since then the band has been very busy touring and writing enough songs to make an album. In April 2005, they went to Chicago, Illinois, to record everything they had with John McEntire (Tortoise) in his Soma Electronic Studios. “I Love You, But…” / “C’mon Chameleon” is the first release from the time in Chicago. In February 2006 they released their debut album Breaking Up. They are signed to At Large Recordings, a subsidiary of EMI.

News

It's been nearly a decade since we last heard new Portishead material, but founding member Geoff Barrow insists an actual album may be emerging at the moment. Commenting on the group's MySpace page, he wrote, "The tracks are in a right mess but sounding like [an] album for the first time in years. It's nice to think us old gits have a few tunes in us without sounding like coffee table Zero 7 [or] Moby chill-out shit!" ...

Broken Social Scene will take some time off once it wraps up its tour commitments. Although it hasn’t used the word “breakup,” the Canadian outfit told Billboard that it plans to take a break after it wraps up a fall tour, which is in the planning stages. The band didn’t forecast how long it’s break will last, though many members already have solo projects in the works ...

Ani DiFranco will have her 17th studio album in stores next month. DiFranco’s Reprieve will surface Aug. 8, from DiFranco’s Righteous Babe label. The 13-song album was recorded entirely by DiFranco with bassist Todd Sickafoose in DiFranco’s New Orleans home studio. The album’s cover art depicts a eucalyptus tree near ground zero at Nagasaki in 1945 by photographer Yosuke Yamahata shortly after the detonation of the atomic bomb ...

The Electric Soft Parade has broken ground on its next album. The band headed into Oxfordshire’s Truck studios to begin work on the follow-up to this year’s The Human Body EP (Better Looking Records). Although no title has been revealed, the act plans to have the record surface in the States in spring from Better Looking Records ...

The Lemonheads will break a nearly 10-year studio silence this fall. Evan Dando and his latest Lemonheads lineup (drummer Bill Stevenson and bassist Karl Alvarez, both formerly of All), will drop its self-titled effort Sept. 26 from Vagrant ...

Grizzly Bear will make its Warp Records debut this fall. The act’s The Yellow House follows up this year’s Sorry for the Delay (Audraglint), which collected the Boston band’s demo recordings. The Yellow House surfaces Sept. 5 from Warp ...

The Long Blondes

The Long Blondes came together through a series of chance encounters. Kate (lips), Dorian (licks), Reenie (hips), Screech (sticks) and Emma (high kicks) bumped into each other at public library counters, charity shop sale rails and the dancefloors of DIY club nights. It was deliciously inevitable that this lot would get together and form a band. The Long Blondes are the part of the next chapter of Sheffields idiosyncratic musical heritage: the suburban disco fantasies of the Human League, the opulent ridiculousness of ABC, the seedy glamour of Pulp.

The Long Blondes have released a couple of singles and are working on their debut album (release date still not set). The last single Weekend Without Makeup is released for Rough Trade and is available via Amazon. The introduction to the band with couple of songs is available as free podcast episode here.

The Diableros

The Diableros are a 6-piece indie-rock band coming from Toronto, Canada. The band includes long-time friends Gary Leggett and Ian Jackson on bass and guitar respectively, supported by Tara Huk on Farfisa and Matt Rubba on keys. Phoebe Lee keeps them in check on drums.

The Diableros formed in the spring of 2004, initially for a Jesus and Mary Chain tribute night thrown by Dan Burke at the Silver Dollar. After playing together once afterwards for fun, core members Pete, Tara and Phoebe realized that they were onto something worthwhile and decided to start a real band. Over the rest of the year the group grew into a six member outfit, which would slowly edge its way to the forefront of the Toronto indie pop/rock scene. The Diableros take strange life experiences, wrap them in a wall of sound and break them loose again. Imagine The Jesus & Mary Chain, The Walkmen and The Modern Lovers partying in Bowie's ballroom.

In the past year, the Diableros have shared stages with The Zoobombs, Tangiers, Art Brut, Jon-Rae & The River, The Soundtrack Of Our Lives, Anagram, The Creeping Nobodies, Grassy Knoll & The Magic Bullit, The Airfields, In Support Of Living, The Floor, The Vulcan Dub Squad, Wintersleep, The Guest Bedroom, The Two Koreas, The Ladies and Gentlemen, The Mark Inside, Foxes, Lipstick Machine, Henri Faberge & the Adorables, The Patients and many more.

Their debut album, You Can't Break The Strings In Our Olympic Hearts, was independently released in November 2005. In 2006 the album is released for the Baudelaire label. The Diableros share the same enthusiasm and spirit as The Arcade Fire and Broken Social Scene. Their music is impressive and exciting with authentic vocals and beautiful fuzzy sounds. Their debut-album is a true gem, one of the best recent releases and the most serious candidate for the best of 2006. It can be previewed at the band's official internet page. It's highly recommended!

Maritime

Shadows of past lives can get long, but they needn't darken the present. People know Davey von Bohlen and Dan Didier as half of The Promise Ring, the band that unwittingly resurrected a genre (or at least the name of a genre) and influenced untold numbers of kids to put thinking and feeling and rocking all together in one package. Eric Axelson, meanwhile, made the shimmy shake as the bassist of The Dismemberment Plan. Once again, in case you hadn't heard: Those bands broke up.

But before the carcasses were cold, there was Maritime. A logical extension of where these players had been and, simultaneously, a clean break, the new band feels like freedom-uninterested in restrictions either self-imposed or publicly expected. Maritime made their first record right away, and Glass Floor (released in early 2004) gently hummed with life and pop and good cheer. In its simplicity, it felt like a gentle kiss-off, a mostly happy stroll that was content to walk a straight line. Bands could make records just like it forever, and the world would be a better place.

But what to do for album number two, when the shadow cast by past triumphs is shorter and expectations (both public and private) don't feel as weighty as they once did? Here's what you do: You make We, The Vehicles-a triumphant realization of Maritime's unlabored goal and an occasional turn toward the darker, denser corners of years past. That's right: We, The Vehicles isn't all sunshine and bubbles. Maritime remains solidly tethered to pop perfection, but has taken space to let that pop cycle through all its permutations.

The sophomore release from Maritime is a great indie-pop release, exciting and catchy, an album that could play at your car stereo whole summer. Highly recommended!

Falcon The Band

Falcon is the band I discovered via Radio-Indie-Pop. It's an indie-rock outfit coming from Brooklyn, US. There's no much informations available regarding the band's bio and discography except that it's the band with world’s most complicated backstory. Apparently, Falcon are unsigned artists that make wonderful tunes similar to the music of My Morning Jacket or Band Of Horses but more poppy. The band has been working with Daniel Wallace, a novelist, on music to accompany O Great Rosenfeld, the book which tells the story of a hapless prehistoric tribe. The soundtrack for the book is excellent and is available for preview here!
