Young Galaxy

Stephen Ramsay and Catherine McCandless are Young Galaxy. Formed in the fog and bonfires of the West Coast and currently based in the romance and severity of Montreal, they create a kaleidoscopic sound with heavy tones and hypnotic male/female vocals.

Young Galaxy has signed for independent label Arts & Crafts and is currently working on it's debut album. Recorded with Jace Lasek and friends at Breakglass Studio in Montreal, the album will be released Spring 2007.

Young Galaxy will tour this fall supporting The Dears. The touring lineup of Young Galaxy will include Pat Sayers, Stephen Kamp and Susan Beckett.

The Crash

The Crash are an indie pop-rock band from Turku, Finland. The band formed after Teemu Brunila and Samuli Haataja met in 1991, with both Erkki Kaila and Dani Aavinen joining to complete the line up. Originally the band were called Ladies & Gentlemen, but later changed its name to New Deal. In 1997 the name was changed to The Crash.

Their debut album 'Comfort Deluxe', was released in 1999, and was followed by a tour of Europe including Sweden, Germany, and Austria, as well as performance at the In The City festival in Manchester, UK. This caught the attention of Melody Maker and MTV Nordic. A second album, 'Wildlife', was released in 2001, with the single from that album, "Lauren Caught My Eye", being played on MTV, and the music video for "Star" earning the band a nomination for Best Nordic Artist at the MTV Europe Awards in 2002. After a year touring Europe as a headline act and with Eskobar, Weeping Willows and A-Ha, the band regrouped to record their third album 'Melodrama'. The album is a glorious and unique combination of dance music from the 70’s, classic rock from the 80’s, and a touch of soul from 60’s America.

The new Crash album 'Pony Ride' came out in Finland on the 27th of September. It debuted at number 2 on the Finnish album chart. It's recommended for all who like Scissor Sisters, Starsailor, etc.

Benjy Ferree

Benjy Ferree is a new artist to join Domino Records collective (Franz Ferdinand, Arctic Monkeys, Psapp, etc). Raised in an vigorously religious but musical family, Benjy was inspired at an impressionable age by Will Oldham: not to rock, but to act, thanks to young Will's performance in John Sayles' Matewan, a movie based on flesh and blood (The Hatfields of that famous familial squabble, if you must know). After high school, he moved straight to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career, supporting himself in a variety of service industry jobs (including a stint as an au pair during which he crossed paths with David Lynch, but, more like, David Lynch's kids). Frustrated with his experiences there, Benjy returned to The Potomac Basin. While bartending at The Black Cat in DC, he was befriended by Brendan Canty (Fugazi), amongst many others, who encouraged him to focus instead on the songs he'd been writing for his own personal enjoyment. What you have here are the fruits of that encouragement ...

Benjy Ferree is an extraordinary singer/songwriter. His debut album, Leaving The Nest, is set for release in North America on November 7th, with a European release to follow in early 2007. Recommended!

The Never

The group that would become indie rock band the Never was first formed by high-school student Noah Smith as an art project at the North Carolina School of the Arts in the spring of 2000. With his friend Ari Picker, Smith assembled a group called the B-Sides, eventually also including Ken Mosher (formerly of Squirrel Nut Zippers), Travis Horton, and Eric Kuhn. The band continued after Smith graduated from high school, self-releasing an album, Yes, Indeed, the B-Sides, Quite! (2001). Personnel changes ensued, however, and they were reduced to just the duo of Smith and Picker, who recruited bassist Joah Tunnell and his brother, Jonny Tunnell, a drummer, and changed the name of the group to the Never. They signed to MoRisen Records in February 2003 and released a self-titled album on May 18, 2004. Switching to Trekky Records, they followed with the concept album Antarctica: A Storybook Record, packaged as both a CD and a book illustrated by Smith, given national release on July 11, 2006.

The Little Ones

The Little Ones are comprised of Ian Moreno, Edward Nolan Reyes, Brian Reyes, Lee Ladouceur, and Greg Meyer. Coming together in Los Angeles in early 2006, the summery-sounding Little Ones wear their influences (the Beach Boys, the Zombies) on their sleeves while composing some of the brightest indie rock of the new millennium. They self-released their debut EP, Sing Song, that spring. That fall, the band landed a worldwide deal with Astralwerks -- Heavenly Recordings in the U.K. and Europe and Astralwerks in the Americas. A reissued version of Sing Song, which included a previously unavailable bonus track, arrived in October.

The Little Ones sound extremly enjoying and entertaining. Their music is pleasant and catchy, the shiny pop music at it's best. I look forward to hear their upcoming full-length release. Highly recommended for all the fans of E6 collective, The Shins, Oh No! Oh My! and similar.

News

Babyshambles have confirmed that they will release seven songs under the title The Blinding EP. The recording, which is due for release in late November, will be the band's first release since leaving Rough Trade records last year. Bassist Drew McConnell told NME that the EP could even have been a full-length album. "We recorded 11 songs but we're only going to put seven on the EP," he explained. Both the band and their new label are using the EP as a tester for a potential long-term record deal ...

Keane plan to release live albums from each night of their upcoming UK tour. The band are planning to record every show and get CDs of the gigs pressed on site and made available ten minutes after the band vacate the stage, reports NME. The bootlegs can be pre-ordered before the gig or bought on the night - only 1000 will be made available for each show ...

British buzz-band The Klaxons are delaying their inaugural trip to the United States. The band, dubbed "new rave" by the British music press, was scheduled to play a five-date tour starting Nov. 1 in New York, but nixed those plans. Instead, they'll reschedule those shows sometime in early 2007. No reasons were given to the cancellation ...

We Are Scientists are getting set to unload their crap on fans with an oddballs collection. The act's Crap Attack CD/DVD package rounds up a series of B-sides and remixes and a DVD full of live recordings and music videos. The collection, which the band dubbed "our most unedited expulsion to date," follows up this year's With Love and Squalor (Virgin) ...

The Black Rebel Motorcycle Club will be back in early 2007 -- with a louder album. The band broke ground on the follow-up to last year's Howl (RCA), according to Billboard. The magazine also reports that the trio's preparing a set that gets away from the acoustic numbers on Howl to bring back electric arrangements for some of the album ...

Nine Black Alps are ready to record a new album. The British rock act announced it was packing its bags to head to Los Angeles to record the follow-up to this year's Everything Is (Interscope). Dave Sardy (Dandy Warhols, The Walkmen) will man the boards. No release date for the album has been revealed, though the act hinted at an early 2007 release ...

Gary Lucas and Gods & Monsters

When he was nine, Gary Lucas' dad suggested he take up playing the guitar. Although he followed his dad's suggestion, Lucas focused more on the French horn that he played for his elementary school band and continued to play, until getting kicked out of his high school's band. Lucas then focused wholly on the guitar, and played in various groups throughout the '60s. While a campus station music director during his second year at Yale, Lucas saw Captain Beefheart in concert and immediately wanted to play with Beefheart's unique band more than anything. Shortly thereafter, he interviewed and got to know Beefheart.

Gary Lucas soon performed as a soloist in the European premiere of Bernstein's Mass (From the Liturgy of the Roman Mass) (1973), and after graduating from college, moved to Taipei for two years. During that time, he led a locally popular group, the O-Bay-Gone-Band, until a chaotic 1976 show broke out into a brawl that seriously injured many people. Upset, Lucas promptly returned to the States, hooked back up with Beefheart and was finally invited to join the band. He appears on Doc at the Radar Station, and was a full member of the group by the Ice Cream for Crow album. After Beefheart retired in the early '80s to pursue painting, Lucas couldn't imagine topping his experience of playing in a group he considered the number one avant-garde rock band in the world, so he switched over to the production end of music, producing albums by Peter Gordon and Tim Berne, among others.

In 1988, Lucas returned to live performance with a highly acclaimed solo set at N.Y.C.'s Knitting Factory, and continued to play shows and tour for more than a decade to follow. Shortly after his return, he collaborated with longtime friend Walter Horn on a score for The Golem (a 1920 German Expressionist film) as a commission for the 1989 Brooklyn Academy of Music Next Wave Festival. That same year, Lucas formed his rock band Gods and Monsters. Over time, the band's lineups included Jeff Buckley and Matthew Sweet. By 1999, the Gods and Monsters' lineup was in trio form with ex-Swans drummer Jonathan Kane and former Modern Lovers bassist Ernie Brooks; the LP Improve the Shining Hour appeared in early 2000. In addition to Gods and Monsters and various solo projects, Lucas formed the Du-Tels, a psychedelic folk duo with Peter Stampfel, in 1994.

Guitarist extraordinaire / Grammy-nominated songwriter Gary Lucas (Captain Beefheart, Jeff Buckley) delivers the goods with the new studio album by psychedelic rock band Gods & Monsters. Lucas ties together all the diverse musical threads and then some. "Coming Clean²"showcases him at the top of his game, featuring his New Wave super-group that includes Billy Ficca from Television and Jonathan Kane from Swans on drums and Ernie Brooks from the Modern Lovers on bass.

Special guests David Johansen (New York Dolls), Richard Barone (Bongos) and sultry French superstar Elli Medeiros are along for the trip. From the title track (mixed by Talking Head¹s JERRY HARRISON) to the wild blues-rock showstopper "One Man's Meat", it's a total joy and a total knockout. Covers include everything from Hitchcock¹s "Psycho" theme to Springsteen's "Ain't Got You". Lucas plays the guitar like nobody else, and writes original, haunting songs (he-co-wrote Jeff Buckley's "Grace" and "Mojo Pin" and Joan Osborne's "Spider Web") -- a rare talent indeed, and here at his most accessible-- a classic album from one of the most creative minds in modern rock.

Page France

Baltimore's Page France feature Michael Nau (vocals, guitar, keyboards), Whitney McGraw (glockenspiel, keyboards, vocals), Clinton Jones (drums), and Jasen Reeder (bass). The indie rock quartet formed in 2004 and issued its debut album, Come, I'm a Lion, a year later. Indie rock fans were wowed by Nau's earnestness, and the press compared to him to the likes of Jeff Tweedy and Bright Eyes' Conor Oberst. Page France's sophomore effort, Hello, Dear Wind, arrived in fall 2005; it was later reissued via Suicide Squeeze in fall 2006.

The band's music tends to be emotional and their songs tend to have simple melodies. Page France is sometimes compared to Sufjan Stevens for their use of uncommon instruments such as the glockenspiel and banjo.

The band has been characterised by some as Christian due to a number of references song lyrics and titles. However, lyricist Michael Nau counters: "The 'Christian band' inquiry wears me out, to be honest. As for the Christian symbols in my writing - sometimes I don’t even realise that they exist until someone points them out to me. There’s really no reason; it just rolled out that way.

Check the Page France if you still haven't. Highly Recommended!

Saturna play music in the vein of Jesus and Mary Chain, Doves, Serena Maneesh, Spiritualized, Secret Machines or Silversun Pickups. Catchy melodies, fuzzy guitars and nice, often backed up vocals, are creatively exploited through every single song.

The Boats

The Boats are an experimental indie rock band from Melbourne, Australia.

The story of the band is following …a jam on a cool autumn night in May 2003, between two old friends and two prospective drummers. Paul Guseli [ Front of Van] turned up in his xf panel van, head-shaved and stocked with beer and lovely vintage drums, not to mention the knack for telling a good story or two! Less than 15 minutes into the jam, Jona Byron [ The Dirty Royals, The Waiting Place ] and Nick Conolly [ Miasma, The Daze, Royalchord, The Waiting Place ] knew that this was the birth of something special. The next 6 months saw the band work on improvisational material, combining structured songs with spontaneous jams - this was to become a trademark sound for The boats. Some of these moments were compiled into a demo-ep. Despite the lo-fi sonic quality, the CD received favourable airplay on RRR and PBS FM.

The Boats played their first show at Good Morning Captain in Melbourne, with long improvised jams that captured the ears and curiosity of many punters. However, it was the Museum show with Seascapes of the Interior & Chris Cobilis (The Tigers) that developed the band’s reputation as a new, unique and dynamic force. This paved the way for higher profile shows including a packed EP launch with Black Cab at The Tote, at which one punter aptly described them as “…the band who should have written the soundtrack to Surf Nazis Must Die”.

The Boats conjure up moments of Mogwai, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Ennio Morricone, Set Fire to Flames, The Necks and The Dirty Three… all the while remaining truly unique in their delivery.

The Boats released the EP Perennial Love as an intro to a full-length debut. The EP will be available in limited numbers at live shows or as DRM free mp3 downloads from bigrigrecords.net. It is also being distributed globally as a digital release and will be available through most commercial online digital music retailers from November.

Barton Carroll

Since 2002, Barton Carroll has toured and recorded extensively with Crooked Fingers, playing guitar, steel guitar, and upright bass. Carroll has also toured, playing various instruments with Azure Ray, Dolorean, and Micah P. Hinson.

Barton Carroll's second solo work, "Love & War" will be released October 17th on Skybucket Records. A veteran of storytelling phenoms Crooked Fingers, and gunslinger for Azure Ray, Dolorean, and Micah P. Hinson, Carroll's own songwriting is forged of similar metal and yet has a brightness and wear all it's own.

”With a tambourine rigged to play with a foot pedal and a harmonica hanging from it's brace around his neck, Barton Carroll brought forth visions from his guitar, with his light woodworkers voice. The visions were of hollow desperation and quiet dreams, a young man going off to war, a refugee traveling to a new life full of fear and aching with love, a soldier coming home to his beloved, only to spend his nights in the horror of the battlefield. Barton captured the audience and swept them away to his own literary shadowland.”
