Top Ten 2005

It's the end of the year and here is my top ten selection for 2005.

10. Sigur Ros - Takk

A story told from the first to the last song. Simply an unique and a beautiful release.

09. Editors - Back Room

Someone would say it's not original, we've heard that with Joy Division, Interpol or even Depeche Mode. But is it good? Hell yes. It's one of my favorites in 2005.

08. Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake It's Morning

Conor Oberst worked hard in this year. Two full-length albums, one live album and a number of collaborations with other artists. This album is the Bright Eyes best release up to now, compact and powerful.

07. Devendra Banhart - Cripple Crow

Devendra Banhart has already established himself as the one of the most important figures in the so-called freak-folk community. With the Cripple Crow his arrogance is obvious, he's self-assured more than ever delivering probably his best album up to now.

06. M.I.A. - Arular

One of the most exciting surprises in the past year. Sri-Lankan born hip-hop singer collaborating with the well-established figure in the world of electronic music - Diplo (Diplomats), delivered highly praised release that one must have.

05. Decemberists - Picaresque

Decemberists have a number of releases behind them. This one is certainly their most complete release, the one that shows the maturity of the band and their music.

04. Antony & The Johnsons - I Am A Bird Now

With this album A&J won the Mercury prize. Strongly filled with emotions and beautiful sounds this album is the must for everyone.

03. My Morning Jacket - Z

This albums is the highlight in the work of My Morning Jacket. It's a gem, a piece of art that would be hard to repeat.

02. Franz Ferdinand - You Could Have It So Much Better

This album is so good that I afraid that it may turn to mainstream. Franz Ferdinand have fulfilled the expectations and confirmed that they rule the new brit-rock scene.

01. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - Clap Your Hands Say Yeah

When the band delivers something really unique that comes from their own kitchen and it's really refreshing and good, then it deserves to hit the top of the list. CYHSY are definitely my top choice for this year and I recommend it highly.

Some other releasess worth listening:
Sleater-Kinney - The Woods
The Hold Steady - Separation Sunday
Sufjan Stevens - Illinois
The New Pornographers - Twin Cinema
Babyshambles - Down In Albion
The White Stripes - Get Behind Me Satan
The Magic Numbers - The Magic Numbers
Art Brut - Bang Bang R'n'R
Okkervill River - Black Sheep Boy
Caesars - Paper Tigers
LCD Soundsystem - LCD Soundsystem
The Tears - Here Come The Tears
The Capes - Hello
Wolf Parade - Apologies To The Queen Mary
Broken Social Scene - Broken Social Scene
Stars - Set Yourself On Fire
Metric - Live It Out
Mew - And The Glass Handed Kites

I expected more from (black list):
Billy Corgan - The Future Embrace
Adam Green - Gemstones
Oasis - Don't Believe The Truth

Keep your eyes on:
The Strokes - First Impressions Of The Earth
Arctic Monkeys - Whatever People Say I Am ...

I wish to all of you Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I hope to get some more interaction with you in the next year. That's why I would invite you to participate more in the further development of this page by leaving comments, discussing music, etc. Have nice holidays, make love.

I will not post in the next two weeks. Until next year. Bye.

Animal Collective Live

In 2000, in New York City, Avey Tare (aka David Porter) and Panda Bear (aka Noah Lennox) established Animal Collective with the issue of Spirit They're Gone, Spirit They've Vanished on their own Animal imprint. It was the first of a flurry of captivating, occasionally frustrating releases exploring the fringes and intersecting boundaries of folk, noise rock, ambient drone, twisted psychedelia, and, ultimately, pure melody. Joined by their friends Geologist (aka Brian Weitz) and Deaken (aka Conrad Deaken), Tare and Panda Bear released Danse Manatee (Catsup Plate) in 2001, followed by a live release documenting their debut tour with Black Dice. Here Comes the Indian (Paw Tracks) was issued in 2003 to considerable acclaim, and the Collective backed it up with the droning, folky simmer of Campfire Songs, again for Catsup Plate. (FatCat also became the group's European sponsor, issuing their first two albums as a package and signing them for future releases.) Animal Collective returned in May 2004 with Sung Tongs, a mysterious, fragilely melodic album that garnered even more critical acclaim and spawned a series of tours. Panda Bear issued Young Prayer, his solo debut, in September 2004. The Prospect Hummer EP, which featured a collaboration with Vashti Bunyan, appeared in May 2005, and the full-length Feels followed in October of that year.

Rilo Kiley Live Concert

Jenny Lewis (vocals, guitar, keyboards), Blake Sennet (guitar, vocals), Pierre de Reeder (bass) and Dave Rock (drums, later replaced by ex-Lassie Foundation member Jason Boesel) formed Rilo Kiley in 1998 in Los Angeles. Three years after its formation, the band released Take Offs and Landings on the Barsuk label. The supporting tour found the band opening for the Breeders, Pedro the Lion, and Superchunk. Rilo Kiley's follow-up, The Execution of All Things appeared on Saddle Creek in fall 2002. The quartet earned major-label distribution (through Warner) for third album More Adventurous. The presented is a live concert from Rilo Kiley form March 1, 2003 at Black Cat, Washington, DC.

Live: Queens Of The Stone Age

Originally formed under the name Gamma Ray by guitarist Josh Homme and drummer Alfredo Hernandez to outgrow the stoner rock label that had begun to envelop previous band Kyuss, Queens of the Stone Age developed a style of riff-oriented, monotonous, heavy and repetitious music, which Homme described as robot rock, saying that he "wanted to create a heavy sound based on a solid jam, and just pound it into your head". This label no longer holds true and has since been discarded, as the band is now widely considered one of the most eclectic and innovative bands in the often generic hard rock landscape.

News

Blur have revealed they are definitely working on new material and will be heading into the studio this month. Speaking to BBC6 music, bassist Alex James said: "It's like a family and you all get together before Christmas and it's great to see everybody, and then after Christmas, Christmas being an album and the album making process this time, and after the album, you're like 'see you next time' through gritted teeth." The album is due out next year ...

Arctic Monkeys have confirmed the title of their debut album. It will be called Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not and is due out on January 30, reports NME.com. A single from the album, When The Sun Goes Down, will be released on January 16. The single will feature two new tracks, Stickin' To The Floor and 7. A vinyl version will feature an extra track, Settle For a Draw. A final tracklisting for the album will be confirmed shortly ...

The Bravery have said the new songs they're playing on the road show a "new side" to the group. The band are finishing 2006 with a tour of North America with Depeche Mode, and have been playing two new tracks, 'Angelina' and 'Oh Glory'. Guitarist Michael Zakarin told Billboard that it's not certain the tracks will feature on the follow-up to their debut album, but they explore a different sound ...

Sufjan Stevens, the Magic Numbers and Engineers lead the lineup for the upcoming tribute album "Dream Brother: The Songs of Jeff & Tim Buckley." Due Jan. 31 via Rykodisc, the 13-track set also features contributions from the Earlies, Adem, Kathryn Williams, King Creosote and Micah P. Hinson. Covering Tim Buckley tracks are Stevens ("She Is"), the Magic Numbers ("Sing a Song for You"), Engineers ("Song to the Siren"), Williams ("Buzzin' Fly") and Tungg ("No Man Can Find the War"), among others. Jeff Buckley material receiving the interpretative treatment includes "Mojo Pin" (Adem), "Grace" (King Creosote) and "Everybody Here Wants You" (Matthew Herbert and Dani Siciliano) ...

Graham Coxon has announced that he's got a bundle of those bolshy-sweet brand new songs he was playing over the summer down onto tape and kicked them into the shape of an album. Hooray. And in his tradition of having a lovely way with words it will be called 'Love Travels At Illegal Speeds' and will be released via Parlophone on 13 March 2006 ...

Heros Severum

Offering up smart, edgy, and dynamic post-punk guitar music without a bassist to drag them down, Heros Severum formed in Athens, GA, in mid-2000. Guitarist/vocalist Eric Friar and drummer Jeff Cummings were former members of the Athens-based band Wunderkind, while guitarist and vocalist Sherryl A. Branch used to play with another Athens group, the Bet. After joining forces, Heros Severum (the name, incidentally, comes from a tropical fish) began gigging steadily in the South after making their debut at a Halloween 2000 show in their hometown. They were soon sharing stages with the likes of the (International) Noise Conspiracy, Burning Airlines, the Hives, Hey Mercedes, and Small Brown Bike. The group released a five-song EP in 2000, followed by a two-song 7" in 2001. In 2002 their first full-length album "Wonderful Educated Bear" was released. 2005 will see the release of "Plague Dogs", the new full length to be released for Two Sheds Music, that you can preview on the band's MySpace page.

Hi everyone. I'm finally back. Thanks for all the emails and comments you left.

Today I'll present you two artists. The first is Stone Jack Jones, a writer and artist that creates the music similar to those of Tom Waits or Jim White. His debut album Narcotic Lollipop is released for Fictitious Records. The second album is about to come and some sample songs can be heard and downloaded from Jack's MySpace page.

From Monument To Masses

This band is good. Combining politically inspired samples with well-crafted rocking melodies, they create an unique sound that pretends to revolutionize the modern (post) rock music. If they'll succeed is to be seen, but the potential is there. Their music is kind of Mogwai and Godspeed You Black Emperor, but in the same time it's very different and specific.

This is what they say about themselves:

From Monument to Masses is complex and hypnotic post-punk engineered to act as a revolutionary cultural force in service of the People. The band, the sampled sounds, and the music itself call for international Peoples' histories to be revisited and for any provoked indignation to be acted upon. Highly influenced by the likes of Fugazi to Tortoise, Afrika Bambata to DJ Shadow, Don Caballero to Godspeed You Black Emperor, FMTM challenges the audience with epic compositions that abandon conventional song structure. Listen, question, act, repeat.

Note that I'll be away (in France) rest of this week and will not post. Speaking about France, I watched yesterday "Taratata" show on France 4 channel, with live performances from James Blunt and KT Tunstall. James played "You're Beautiful" and cover of Pixies song "Where Is My Mind". KT was pretty amazing covering Jackson Five. Unfortunately I didn't record any of it. Since I'll not post in the next days, today's bonus section will be extended :) Enjoy!

Ben Folds Live + Neutral Milk Hotel News

Singer/pianist Ben Folds is best-known as the leader of the power pop trio Ben Folds Five, but has also struck out on his own as a solo artist. Last Year Folds co-headlined an American tour with fellow rockers Rufus Wainwright and Guster. His most recent solo album, entitled Songs for Silverman, was released in the U.S. on April 26, 2005, featuring Jared Reynolds on bass, and Lindsay Jamieson on the drums, thus returning to the trio format, which originally started his success, in earnest. This album includes the track "Late," a tribute to the late singer-songwriter Elliott Smith, and also features "Weird Al" Yankovic on "Time." Folds performed with Rufus Wainwright and Ben Lee in the summer of 2005 as part of the "Odd Men Out" tour. In addition, Folds has performed with many other famous musical names, including Weezer. Folds has also shown the complexity behind his authentic sound by performing with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra, in March 2005, and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, in November 2005. A DVD recording of Folds playing with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra is set to release in December, 2005. Folds supports the independent music scene, creating his own record label (Attacked By Plastic) and doing promotional work for independent record stores across the country.

It's kind of exciting - there are new Neutral Milk Hotel rare demos surfaced on-line. It's a collection of tape-recorded songs, some of them previously unheard. The collection is from a lady called Shannon Palmer, who occupied the same Louisiana house as Neutral Milk Hotel's Jeff Mangum (as well as Olivia Tremor Control’s John Fernandes). The tape was given to her 11 years ago by Fernandes. The compilation is titled Neutral Milk Hotel Shanons Monroe House Rare Demos and is 69 minutes long featuring 30 tracks. Live: Ramones + Dicks

The Ramones are the first punk rock band. Other bands, such as the Stooges and the New York Dolls, came before them and set the stage and aesthetic for punk, and bands that immediately followed, such as the Sex Pistols, made the latent violence of the music more explicit, but the Ramones crystallized the musical ideals of the genre. By cutting rock & roll down to its bare essentials -- four chords; a simple, catchy melody; and irresistibly inane lyrics -- and speeding up the tempo considerably, the Ramones created something that was rooted in early '60s, pre-Beatles rock & roll and pop but sounded revolutionary. Since their breakthrough was theoretical as well as musical, they comfortably became the leaders of the emerging New York punk rock scene. While their peers such as Patti Smith, Television, Talking Heads, and Richard Hell all were more intellectual and self-consciously artistic than the Ramones, they nevertheless appealed to the same mentality because of the way they turned rock conventions inside out and celebrated kitschy pop culture with stylized stupidity. The band's first four albums set the blueprint for punk, especially American punk and hardcore, for the next two decades. And the Ramones themselves were major figures for the next two decades, playing essentially the same music without changing their style much at all. Although some punk diehards -- including several of their peers -- would have claimed the band's long career wound up undercutting the ideals the band originally stood for, the Ramones always celebrated not just the punk aesthetic, but the music itself.

Ramones - Live Concerts

The Dicks come from Austin, Tx, and were the pioneers of American underground punk music in the eighties. In that time they released two albums, Kill From The Heart and These People. In 1997, the punk label Alternative Tentacles realesed the compilation Dicks: 1980-1986 that includes the band's greatest hits.
