The Capes

Upstart South London band the Capes, having just brought their swaggering arty indie-pop to the United States on a hyper-successful two month tour, will release their debut LP, Hello, on Hard Soul Records on January 24, 2006.

Meeting at the ultra-cool hub of art and music, Goldsmiths College, Kris Barratt (vocals, guitars) and Richie Gladman (keys, guitars, bv’s) got together in the rehearsal rooms with buddy Rupe Cresswell (bass, bv’s), sharing studio space with their school mates Bloc Party and Mower. They started jamming some tracks in what was to become the embryonic stages of the band. After a little while testing out drummers they brought in an old friend Rupe Phelps and started gigging. Realizing they wanted to give things more sonic depth they soon recruited Cresswell’s younger brother Nick (guitars, keys, bvs) and here The Capes were formed.

The Capes' sound echoes bands as diverse as Blur, The Super Furry Animals, The Olivia Tremor Control, The Beach Boys to Lou Barlow and XTC, meeting somewhere in between at a huge explosion of buzzsaw guitars, squelchy old analog synths and soaring West Coast harmonies.

A growing buzz led to interest from US indie Hard Soul Records, which delivered the band’s mini-album Taste to the public this summer. The band enjoyed immediate success with the release of this EP, which was their US debut. With the simultaneous street release and radio add of the EP on July 12th, Taste unexpectedly found itself the nation’s 13th most added at college radio. From there, Taste exploded in every direction enjoying 12 weeks in the CMJ Top 200 peaking well inside the Top 75. Hello has built upon that success with its #46 debut and 3rd Most Added spot.

Hello CDs are on the way, but in the meantime, you check out the album in its entirety here.

Sleater-Kinney Live

The anthemic Olympia, WA-based punk trio Sleater-Kinney formed from the ashes of Heavens to Betsy and Excuse 17, a pair of groups that rode the first wave of the riot grrrl movement. Singer/guitarists Corin Tucker and Carrie Brownstein first met in 1992, when Tucker was one half of the duo Heavens to Betsy; Brownstein, a classically trained pianist, was so inspired by Tucker and other grrrl musicians like Bikini Kill and Bratmobile (not coincidentally Tucker's own influences) that she formed her own band, Excuse 17, a year later. Sleater-Kinney, which earned its name from a local freeway off-ramp, initially began as Tucker and Brownstein's side project; in late 1994, Australia-born Lora MacFarlane signed on as the group's first permanent drummer, and over the course of the following two weeks, the trio recorded its self-titled 1995 debut for Team Dresch bassist Donna Dresch's Chainsaw label. Upon its release, the album earned widespread acclaim for its visceral intensity as well as the group's provocative, politically charged lyrics, passionate vocals, and intricate melodies.

With 1996's brilliant Call the Doctor, Sleater-Kinney garnered even greater media exposure and critical applause on the strength of their incisive rants against gender inequity, consumerism, and indie rock's male-dominated hierarchy. Their Kill Rock Stars label debut, Dig Me Out, recorded with new drummer Janet Weiss from Quasi, followed in 1997, and was again among the most acclaimed releases of its season; The Hot Rock appeared two years later, and in the spring of 2000, Sleater-Kinney resurfaced with All Hands on the Bad One. In August of 2002 the group returned with its most musically accomplished record yet, One Beat. Sleater-Kinney upped the ante again with 2005's powerful, inventive The Woods, which was released by Sub Pop, was produced by Dave Fridmann, and was inspired by, among other things, the political climate of the mid-2000s and the freedom of the improvised parts of their gigs supporting Pearl Jam on their 2003 tour.

Tall Dwarfs

Formed in 1979, the Kiwi duo The Tall Dwarfs, made up of Chris Knox and Alec Bathgate, influenced such bands as Yo La Tengo and Pavement with its playful, lo-fi home recordings and were members of the highly touted New Zealand underground scene of the 80s and 90s that included The Clean, The Chills, and Bailter Space. Featuring found sounds, an oddball sense of humor, and warped hooks, the Tall Dwarfs’ Weeville and Fork Songs -- released on Flying Nun in New Zealand -- have long been out of print. The Tall Dwarfs’ influence can readily be heard in the Olivia Tremor Control’s sound, so it was only natural that Cloud Recordings -- owned and operated by OTC’s John Fernandes -- would choose to reissue them. In fact, the Tall Dwarfs recently made a rare US tour appearance supporting the Olivia Tremor Control in a series of highly publicized and successful shows. Weeville and Fork Songs are being released at the October 25th, on Cloud Recordings.

Nada Surf Live

Alternative rockers Nada Surf teamed singer/guitarist Matthew Caws and bassist Daniel Lorca, longtime school friends who played together in various bands throughout their formative years. After Lorca spent a year in Spain, he returned to New York in 1988, where he and Caws eventually formed Because Because Because; by 1993 the group had mutated into Nada Surf, issuing an indie label single which won them a contract with a European label. After recording an LP, the band's original drummer quit and was replaced by ex-Fuzztone Ira Elliot; the European deal then fell through, but a demo copy of the completed album was passed to Ric Ocasek, who agreed to produce the sessions if Nada Surf wished to re-record the material. The trio soon signed to Elektra, and with Ocasek at the helm they cut their 1996 debut LP, High/Low; some of the completed European tracks also made their way onto an EP, Karmic. Nada Surf returned in 1998 with their second full-length, The Proximity Effect. The band's third album, Let Go followed in 2002; it was reissued with additional tracks on Barsuk in 2003. Death Cab for Cutie's Chris Walla produced Nada Surf's second album for Barsuk, The Weight Is a Gift. It was released in September 2005.

Venice Is Sinking + What We Do Is Secret

Venice Is Sinking is a five-members indie band from Athens, Georgia. The music of the band could be described as lo-fi-indie, kind of My Morning Jacket. Two vocals, from the guitarist, Daniel Lawson, and violin player, Karolyn Troupe, are well harmonized and fit perfectly with the melodies they play. The band plans to release their full-length debut album in March next year. Some of the songs are released on the split EP, together with What We Do Is Secret, a band from Atlanta. You can purchase it at the band's official page.

What We Do Is Secret comes from Atlanta. They are 5 members outfit playing indie-punk. Their songs remind a bit on Sonic Youth's songs performed by Kim Gordon. Give it a try.

Happy Bullets + Tah Dahs

If you're into the pop music of Elephant 6 collective bands, then you'll certainly like (maybe adore) these two bands - the Happy Bullets and the Tah Dahs. Both come from Dallas and are on new indie label Undeniable Records.

The Happy Bullets play very enjoyable and melodic pop music. They're often experimenting with instruments and vocals in order to deliver an unique sound and they're doing it great. Their upcoming release is called "Vice and Virtue Ministry" and can be purchased at their label site. This is their second release.

The Happy Bullets - The Vice And Virtue Ministry

Tah Dahs sound very fresh and powerfull. Their music is so energy-full that will instantly make you increase the volume of your hi-fi and start dancing. The guys simply rock (in a pop way). Their debut album is called "Le Fun" and can be purchased at Undeinable Rec.

Tah Dahs - Cool Band

More songs from both bands can be streamed here. Do it!

RHCP Live + WSTW Selection

Few rock groups of the '80s broke down as many musical barriers and were as original as the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Creating an intoxicating new musical style by combining funk and punk rock together (with an explosive stage show, to boot), the Chili Peppers spawned a slew of imitators in their wake, but still managed to be the leaders of the pack by the dawn of the 21st century.

RHCP - Live @ Bridge School Benefit, 23/24-10-2004

The Arrogants

The Arrogants are 5 members indie pop outfit from Huntigton Beach, California. They are formed in 1998 by three of McFerson brothers and their "adopted sister" Janna Wittern (now Heller). The band later added the fifth memeber, Billy Pena, on the drums. The Arrogants deliver a sort of emotinal-pop music leaded by a very gentle voice of the singer Janna Heller and a compact instrumentation of the McFersons. The music is warm and sweet, acoustic songs are especially nice, and sometimes the electronic is used in a very moderate way. Listening to "Lovesick" song from the latest release, proves that the band is capable for making some true hits as well.

The band has recently released the new album, "You've always known when best so say goodbye...", 23 songs LP, that is the follower to their first two EP releases, "Nobody's cool" and "Your simple beauty", freely available for download at the band's official site. The new album can be purchased at Tweekitten.

The Beautiful New Born Children

Recently I was introduced to a mysterious band called the Beautiful New Born Children. Instead to describe what's here on about, I'll just quote the short info on the band given at la-chunga.com.

A breathless, adrenaline-fuelled, amphetamine-spiked burst of punk rock spleen colliding with a fascination for the hypnotic motorik rhythms of so-called Krautrock and the textures of pure noise: that's BEAUTIFUL NEW BORN CHILDREN (even if that sentence lasted longer than most of their songs).
This is the filthiest, dirtiest, ugliest rock and roll mess heard in years. This is Raw Power, careering recklessly between MC5, The Buzzcocks, The Stooges and The Jesus & Mary Chain. Played with the kind of intensity that suggests their fingers are bleeding by the end of each and every song, BEAUTIFUL NEW BORN CHILDREN are as exciting and primal a band as you are likely to hear.

Bootlegs: Keane, Embrace, Oasis

Tom Chaplin (vocals), Richard Hughes (drums), and Tim Rice-Oxley (piano) are childhood friends from Battle, East Sussex, England who make up the merry pop sounds of Keane. Formed in 1997 while each were attending college, Keane initially started out as a cover band. They played Oasis, U2 and Beatles songs in and around Sussex with guitarist Dominic Scott. The schtick would only last so long, for Keane got tired of playing everyone else's songs and yearned to do things on their own. When Chaplin left his Art History studies at Edinburgh University behind in 1999 and moved to London to join the rest of his mates, Keane had a chance to really do it.

In December 2002, Keane got the break that they'd be waiting for. Fierce Panda's Simon Williams was summoned by a friend to attend a Keane gig in London. He was so impressed by the band's performance, Williams offered to issue the band's next single, Everything's Changing, on the spot. The limited-edition release was such a success on radio, several labels soon swarmed around the indie rock trio, eager to offer them a recording contract. Keane signed to Island UK in fall 2003 and released their fourth single, This Is The Last Time. The band's full-length debut, Hopes and Fears, appeared the following spring.

Keane - Live in Sweden 2004-07-16

Following in the footsteps of Oasis and the Verve, Embrace became a minor pop sensation in post-Brit-pop Britain in the late '90s. Like Oasis, the group has a knack for big, anthemic hooks, yet they turn these catchy numbers into sweeping, sprawling, lugubrious rockers, much like the Verve. To this date, the band released 4 full-length albums.

Embrace - Live 2005-05-04

Oasis always tried to established themself as The Beatles of the modern age. Although their later work was not too much appreciated by the critics, they succeed to win some of the most prestige awards for the contribution to the UK and world's music. The presented are some live and acoustic recordings showing Oasis in their best mood.

Arctic Monkeys

So, you are a big fan of The Strokes, you enjoyed The Libertines, then it's the time to taste something fresh - Arctic Monkeys.

Arctic Monkeys are a four-piece indie rock band from Sheffield, England that have been described as a northern Libertines, but many fans of the band suggest that they have an even brighter future ahead of them.
They received a great deal of early attention from Radio 1 and the British tabloid press for their catchy songs and witty lyrics. The appearance they made on the Carling Stage at the 2005 Reading and Leeds Festivals was much hyped by the music press, the NME in particular, and the band was received by an abnormally large crowd for the billing they played. The superb performance even included spontaneous sing-a-longs from the more madly devoted fans of the band. Impressively, this included tracks that were only available as demos on the internet. It was at this time that vocalist Alex Turner took the opportunity to rebuff claims that his band could not live up to the hype that has followed their emergence, and declared, "It feels like a moment, us playing here."

The Arctic Monkeys London debut was in February 2005 where they supported The Chineapples. In May 2005 Arctic Monkeys released their debut single Five Minutes with the Arctic Monkeys, featuring the songs Fake Tales of San Francisco and From the Ritz to the Rubble. This release was limited to 1000 in CD format and 500 in 7". In June 2005 the band were signed to Domino Records, and they are due to release their next single, (Bet You) Look Good on the Dancefloor on 17th October 2005 with Bigger Boys and Stolen sweethearts and Chun-Li's Spinning Bird Kick as the B-sides. The video is now on MTV2 and Radio 1 have put it on thier C-List. In September 2005 the band finshed recording their debut album at a studio in Lincolnshire which is due for release in February 2006.
Arctic Monkeys start a UK and worldwide tour starting on 2nd of October 2005 at The Cavern in Liverpool the tour which includes 30 dates finishes on the 23rd of November 2005 in Tokyo.

Weezer Live + Demos

When they first appeared on the commercial pop landscape back in 1994, it wasn't without a fair amount of derision from the indie rock cognoscenti. After all, these guys were copping the indie rock style, using the same pop culture references and the same hooks, but putting it out on a major label with no grassroots support behind them. They had no "cred," as it were. Where did Weezer come from anyway? The answer is: nowhere. Rivers Cuomo founded the band as an outlet for his love of Van Halen, Cheap Trick and Kiss just a year before getting signed. The group was quickly thrust into the spotlight following the mad rush of Nirvana's success, and suddenly "Buddy Holly" and "Undone" were radio hits. The allure of this gaggle of power pop-loving kids with huge amps and no real star appeal wasn't lost on a generation of geeky punks. In the five years between Pinkerton and the band's self-titled 2001 album, they had become somewhat of a phenomenon; their influence began to slowly dominate commercial alt rock radio. Their enormous pop hooks, crunchy guitar chords and quasi-ironic rock had gained critical respect and support among even the most jaded of indie rock fans. With their ability to craft arena-ready guitar pop that transcends mawkishness or trendy aggression, Weezer remain one of the bright lights on the Top 40 landscape.

Beerjacket

This morning I was introduced to a guy-with-the-guitar outfit called Beerjacket. The man behind the Beerjacket is called Peter Kelly, and he comes from the UK. This young singer-songwriter writes some very nice songs inspired with sadness and sorrow. He was the main support for Tom Vek's Scottish tour and was supporting recently Rilo Kiley on their tour. The music from Beerjacket could be compared to those of Jeff Buckley, Elliott Smith or even to Bright Eyes. 'Oh My Head' is the first Beerjacket album, recorded at home on a 4-track between April and June 2004. The record features 10 songs. The sophomore album 'Great Unhappiness', recorded in the period from July to October 2004, includes 10 new songs and can be purchased together with the debut on the Beerjacket official page.

Slowdive - B Sides & Rare

Named after a word in one of Nick Chaplin's dreams -- not from a Siouxsie and the Banshees single -- Slowdive formed in Reading, England, in late 1989. The group orginally consisted of Neil Halstead (guitar/vocals), Rachel Goswell (guitar/vocals), Christian Savill (guitar), Adrian Sell (drums), and Chaplin (bass). Formed when they were mostly in their teens, Slowdive was initially lumped in with the remainder of the early-'90s British shoegaze scene; Slowdive's later releases extended upon the likes of the Cocteau Twins and the more atmospheric sides of post-punk, and they closed out their career with an excellent and misunderstood ambient LP.

Live: Coldplay, Eels, Syd Barret, Butthole Surfers

Like a supernova, Roger "Syd" Barrett burned briefly and brightly, leaving an indelible mark upon psychedelic and progressive rock as the founder and original singer, songwriter, and lead guitarist of Pink Floyd. Barrett was responsible for most of their brilliant first album, 1967's The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, but left and/or was fired from the band in early 1968 after his erratic behavior had made him too difficult to deal with (he appears on a couple tracks on their second album, A Saucerful of Secrets). Such was his stature within the original lineup that few observers thought the band could survive his departure; in fact, the original group's management decided to keep Syd on and leave the rest of the band to their own devices. Pink Floyd never recaptured the playful humor and mad energy of their work with Barrett.

Syd Barret - Live & Rare

Although marketed as a band, the leader and focus of alt-rockers Eels is undeniably singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist E (real name Mark Oliver Everett). The Eels became known to a global audience when their first album, 'Beautiful Freak' was released on 30th July 1996. Since than the group released 5 more albums. Their latest release was 2005's Blinking Lights and Other Revelations, an ambitious double album including 33 songs.

Oasis - Bootlegs, Demos, Rarities

Oasis shot from obscurity to stardom in 1994, becoming one of Britain's most popular and critically acclaimed bands of the decade; along with Blur and Suede, they are responsible for returning British guitar pop to the top of the charts. Led by guitarist/songwriter Noel Gallagher, the Manchester quintet adopts the rough, thuggish image of the Stones and the Who, crosses it with "Beatlesque" melodies and hooks, distinctly British lyrical themes and song structures like the Jam and the Kinks, and ties it all together with a massive, loud guitar roar, as well as a defiant sneer that draws equally from the Sex Pistols' rebelliousness and the Stone Roses' cocksure arrogance. Gallagher's songs frequently rework previous hits from T. Rex ("Cigarettes and Alcohol" borrows the riff from "Bang a Gong") to Wham! ("Fade Away" takes the melody from "Freedom"), yet the group always puts the hooks in different settings, updating past hits for a new era.
