Meredith Bragg And The Terminals

Meredith Bragg got his first guitar the summer before 8th grade. On the ride home from the music store he learned how to play the three-note NBC theme in the back of the van. He wrote his first song a few weeks later and hasn't come up for air since. Today Meredith is regularly backed up by his band The Terminals, consisting of Brian Minter on piano/keyboards, Jonathan Roth on drums, and Elizabeth Olson on cello. Hailing from the eastern seaboard, Meredith Bragg and The Terminals play acoustic indie-rock to those fortunate enough to be in earshot.

The Departures EP is the highly anticipated follow up to the critically acclaimed debut full length, Volume 1. Bragg continues to wield his astounding songwriting skills and innate grasp of atmospherics. The EP was recorded in the spring of 2005 by Chad Clark and T.J. Lipple (Dismemberment Plan, Aloha, Minus Story, Beauty Pill) at Inner Ear Studios in Arlington, Virginia.

Bright Eyes - Live Concert

Bright Eyes is the musical vehicle of Conor Oberst, a young singer-songwriter from Nebraska, who first attracted the attention of the indie music world in 1994 -- when he was just 14-years old -- as the singer and guitarist for Commander Venus. After releasing two albums, Commander Venus broke up, but not before the band members started their own record label, Saddle Creek. Since then, Saddle Creek has served as the outlet for such bands as Cursive and Lullaby for the Working Class, as well as Oberst's current project, Bright Eyes. Incorporating a rotating line-up of players, Bright Eyes is anchored by Oberst's frayed lyrics and his shivering, unnerving voice. Bright Eyes' first two albums, A Collection of songs written and recorded between 1995-1997 and Letting Off the Happiness were released in 1998. The latter was recorded with help from members of Neutral Milk Hotel and Of Montreal among others. The EP Every Day and Every Night followed in 1999, and in mid-2000 Bright Eyes released the acclaimed Fevers and Mirrors. Oh Holy Fools was issued a year later. Oberst took time to dedicate to his Desaparecidos project before returning to the studio in 2002. Lifted or The Story is in the Soil, Keep Your Ear to the Ground was released that summer. In 2004, Bright Eyes released several EPs, including Home, Vol.4, a collaboration with Spoon's Britt Daniel and One Jug of Wine, Two Vessels. Early the following year, Oberst returned with a pair of albums released on the same day -- I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning and the electronic-slanted Digital Ash in a Digital Urn. Presented is a high-quality (192K) bootleg from Bright Eyes, a must for every true BE fan.

People In Planes + The Exit

People in Planes originates from Cardiff, Wales and have been receiving major buzz in the US – especially after their recent tour with The Bravery. It's a 5-piece outfit playing well-crafted and smoothed alternative rock. People in Planes are putting out their debut album on March 28 entitled "As Far As The Eye Can See..." which is produced by Sam Williams (Supergrass – “I Should Coco”). In the meantime you can check People In Planes EP and the single 'Talking Heads'. People in Planes recently had a great opportunity in having Joaquin Phoenix (Johnny Cash in “Walk the Line”) direct the band’s debut video for "If You Talk Too Much (My Head Will Explode)" .

The Exit, an alternative rock trio from New York, caught a lot of buzz with the release of their album “Home For An Island” and their first single entitled “Don’t Push”. The Exit function similarly to the Clash or Husker Du. Two individual songwriters, that each posses their own unique sound and point of view, while complimenting each other. Home For An Island is a significant leap forward from their 2001 debut New Beat. According to Brewer, fans said that their first album was “good, but this is nothing like you guys are live.” The Exit is now putting forth a 2nd single (and video for) “Soldier”, an emotional acoustic ballad about the nonsense of war.

Micah P Hinsen + Ester Drang

Micah Paul Hinsen was born in Memphis, Tennessee and as a teenager moved to Abilene, Texas, where he became a member of the local music scene. That's where Micah first met his then muse – a Vogue cover model and widow of a notable local rock star. Introduced to her, and in turn Valium and other narcotics, it was not long before Micah’s muse turned into the ‘Black Widow’ as he now refers to her, and he hit a horrible twist of events. In the Spring of 2000, he was caught forging prescriptions and was sent to county jail.

At the age of 19, Micah found himself homeless and penniless, wandering from pillar to post, sleeping on friends’ floors. He was eventually forced to declare himself bankrupt and moved into a motel and acquired a mundane telemarketing job. During this period, Micah still managed to write around 30 songs on borrowed instruments and equipment. In the winter of 2003, with help from his old friends from Texas, The Earlies, Micah revisited these songs from his ‘lost’ period to record his debut album, ‘Micah P. Hinson and the Gospel of Progress’. As producers of the record (under their ‘Names On Records’ guise), The Earlies’ trademark of lush strings, beautiful keyboards and eerie backdrops harmonised perfectly with Micah’s honest and exposed style. ‘Micah P. Hinson and the Gospel of Progress’ was released in September 2004 on Sketchbook to a wealth of critical acclaim, with the NME describing it as ‘an astonishing debut album of country noir’. Following three sold out tours of the UK in the autumn/winter of 2004 with The Earlies, Iron and Wine and a full band headline tour, the year ended with the ‘Micah P. Hinson and the Gospel of Progress’ album being voted into numerous end of year best of polls including Uncut, Time Out, Independent - it even reached number 5 in Rough Trade Shop’s 100 best albums of 2004 poll!

Micah P Hinsen joined Jade Tree collective and will release the EP, The Baby and the Satellite, for the first time in the US. The Baby and the Satellite was actually the recording Micah made during his much documented 'lost' period, with his then muse.

Micah P Hinson - The Leading Guy

On January 24th, Jade Tree will release the third full length from Ester Drang, Rocinate, an album that catapults the band even further into their patented synth-dripped rhythms, throbbing percussion, rising horns and post-gazer grandeur, having as much in common with Brian Eno's mournful drone as they do The Notwist's passionate textures. Rocinate affords these Oklahomans the freedom to orchestrate their imagination into a beautiful ensemble of tracks; proving that songs not only have the power to elevate, to leave you infiltrated, but when properly strung together can be as transcendent as they are moving.

The Crimea + Sleeper

The Crimea began life as The Crocketts, signed to UK major label, V2 in 1998. Their output was prolific, to say the least, with some 30 releases in a little under 3 years, including two full-length albums, “We May be Skinny and Wirey” and “The Great Brain Robbery”. Both albums met with tremendous critical acclaim, both in the UK, where they sold a respectable 50 thousand copies, and in the USA and Japan, where they quickly became some of the most sought-after export-only UK releases in a decade. The Crocketts quickly amassed a huge following, on the back of almost non-stop touring (including supports with The Stereophonics and The Levellers), most of whom have remained loyal to the band through their transformation into The Crimea. In late 2001, The Crocketts fell prey to the failing fortunes of V2, who dropped almost half of their roster as part of a ‘rationalisation’ plan. Unwilling to lay down in the face of such a huge setback, Davey and Owen holed themselves up in the rehearsal studio to re-write their musical CV, and emerged late in 2002 with the beginnings of the debut Crimea long-player, “Tragedy Rocks”. Comparisons came quickly, with everyone from Dusty Springfield, Leonard Cohen, The Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev and The Pixies getting a mention.

Sleeper is composed of Louise Wener (vocals, guitar), Jon Stewart (guitar), Andy Maclure (drums) and Diid Osman (bass). Wener and Stewart met at while studying politics at school in Manchester, England. Relocating to London, the two recruited Osman and Maclure and began playing Wener's original songs. The group made its debut in 1993, which led to a series of positive reviews in the British music weeklies. By November of 1993, the group had released an independent single ("Alice in Vain"). In February 1994, the band released "Swallow," which charted in the Top 100; the following May, "Delicious" was released and it became a number one independent single. During May, Sleeper supported Blur on the London band's enormously successful Parklife tour. In February 1995, Sleeper released their debut album, Smart, which entered the U.K. album chart at number five and the independent chart at number one; it would be certified a silver album in four months. Smart was released in the U.S. in March to positive reviews, yet it failed to duplicate the band's British commercial success. In the late spring of 1996, Sleeper released their second album, The It Girl. Again, the album was a major hit in the U.K., yet it barely made an impact in the U.S.

Arctic Monkeys

All the hype around Arctic Monkeys created primarily from NME you should believe. Arctic Monkeys are here, with the new album, fresh and ready to kick some ass. Today is the official release date in Europe for the new album 'Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not'. By default good old Amazon sends the copies of pre-ordered releases some days before official release date, so my copy has alredy arrived. The album comes out in US at 26. of January. The album is released for the independant UK label Domino Records, the home of The Kills, Franz Ferdinand, Pavement, etc. It contains 13 songs of a pure rock, groovy riffs, catchy bass lines and solid vocals. It opens with 'The View From The Afternoon' a song to warm up followed by 'I Bet You Look Good On The Dance Floor' - a mega hit and the first single from the album. Other highlights are slow 'Riot Van', catchy 'Mardy Bum', the second hit single 'When The Sun Goes Down (Scummy), 'From The Ritz To The Rubble' and closing song 'A Certain Romance'. Some songs that you may have heard as demos like 'Cigarette Smoke' or 'Choo Choo' are not on the album. Arctic Monkeys are at the moment one of my favorites, one of the candidates for the best of 2006 and I highly recommend them.

Muse - Live & Rare

The English rock trio Muse consists of guitarist/vocalist Matthew Bellamy, bassist Chris Wolstenhome and drummer Dominic Howard. Bored by the sleepy life their hometown of Teignmouth, Devon provided, the three friends began playing music together. They started the first incarnation of their band when they were all 13, changing the name of the group from Gothic Plague to Fixed Penalty to Rocket Baby Dolls as time passed. By 1997 the band settled on the name Muse and released their self-titled debut EP on Dangerous Records, followed by the Muscle Museum EP in 1998. The group's emotive, Radiohead-like sound and live dates drew critical acclaim and industry buzz, and after a trip to New York's CMJ festival, Muse signed a deal with Maverick Records. Singles like "Cave" and "Uno" preceded their debut full-length album Showbiz, which was released toward the end of 1999. Two years later, Muse issued The Origin of Symmetry and had a major hit with "Hyper Music." In 2002, fans were treated to the double-disc live set Hullabaloo. Muse's fourth album, Absolution, got the usual royal treatment upon its late-2003 release. Stateside fans finally got a taste of Absolution when it was released on Warner Bros. the following March. A short North American tour in the spring coincided Muse's spot on the fifth annual Coachella Music and Arts Festival in May 2004.

Tiger Bear Wolf + furiousBall

For a long time I didn't hear a good old rock'n'roll. Tiger Bear Wolf are 4-piece outfit from Greensboro, NC and as they say themself are in the mission of saving rock'n'roll. Their garage rock is influenced by the music of Led Zeppelin, The Stooges, Fugazi, Polvo, etc. Combining two vocals and the guitars from Jonathon Moore and Noah Howard, supported by Matt Bostick on bass and Lawrence Holdsworth playing drums, the band delivers a raw energy and the sound that makes your heart beats faster. TBF are on Hello Sir Records label and have released self-titled debut that you can purchase on HSR page.

Pete Doherty's latest arrest cost him £50,000 when he wasn't released in time to play a gig in Austria. Austria's FM4 radio station was even more out of pocket as they had hired a private jet for Pete and also had to refund tickets. FM4 had hired a Learjet and crew, and kept it on stand-by for five hours at Luton - at a cost of £20,000. But Pete wasn't released on bail in time, leaving the station having to refund the price of the tickets, which amounted to £100,000. The Daily Mirror's source said: "Pete's bandmates, Drew McConnell and Adam Ficek, flew to Graz without Pete on Saturday afternoon because they thought he'd be released in time to join them for the gig. "The promoters organised the jet for 6pm. It was held for five hours... until it became clear Pete wasn't going to make it." Pete had been held on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs and possession of class A and class C narcotics ...

The Red Hot Chili Peppers plan to release the follow-up to 2002's multiplatinum By the Way, dubbed Stadium Arcadium, in early May. Song titles include "Charlie," "Snow," "Animal Bar," "Wet Sand," "Desecration Smile," "Hard to Concentrate" and "Dani California," the album's first single ...

Fiona Apple Live

Tidal, Fiona Apple's major label debut, came out when the singer-songwriter was only 18, yet she managed to sound old beyond her years, hooking in listeners all over the age spectrum and bypassing the teen pop ghetto that comes with a fiercely enforced "sell-by" date. Her debut single, the darkly baroque "Shadowboxer," was a moderate hit on both alternative rock and adult contemporary radio and along with Apple's often harsh back story and moody, highly photogenic beauty, Tidal became a worldwide hit. Apple's follow-up LP was hindered by having an entire poem as its song title and a cover shot that downplayed her austere beauty. If that seemed like a deliberate attempt to make listeners concentrate on the music, it worked -- especially when When the Pawn... went on to win rave reviews and shoot up to No. 1 on the then-new Internet sales chart. Once again, Apple's pained songcraft slightly obscured how good she really is.

She wasn't heard from again until 2002-'03, when word spread throughout the Internet that Sony was unhappy with Apple's newest songs. (By now the Apple cult had grown immensely, helped along by blogs and message boards.) The controversy continued through 2004, with the facts about who was responsible for the griping - Apple, her label, or the Internet rumor mill - ranging from murky to downright unclear. But tracks had leaked, that was for sure, and while they were apparently unfinished, the fan response was mostly rabid. Apple could now add Internet sensation to her lengthy list of titles (prodigy, tease, true songwriting talent, etc.) The new album finally got the name Extraordinary Machine and was released in 2005.

The Offspring Bootlegs

The Offspring's metal-inflected punk became a popular sensation in 1994, selling over four million albums on an independent record label. While the group's credentials and approach follow the indie rock tradition of the '80s, sonically they sound more like an edgy, hard-driving heavy metal band, with their precise, pulsing power chords and Dexter Holland's flat vocals.

Tori Amos Live

Tori Amos (born Myra Ellen Amos) was one of several female singer/songwriters who combined the stark lyrical attack of alternative rock with a distinctly '70s musical approach. Her music falls between the orchestrated meditations of Kate Bush and the stripped-down poetics of Joni Mitchell. In addition to reviving the singer/songwriter traditions of the '70s, Amos revived the piano as a rock & roll instrument. She released 8 full-length albums. The latest, released in 2005, was an autobiographical record titled The Beekeeper.

Nest + Crix Crax Crux

Nest is a 5-piece indie pop outfit from LA that has just released their self-titled debut EP. The music is dominated by the beautiful voice of the leading singer Ayana Haviv that in some cases reminds on Fiona Apple or even Alanis Morissette. The songs are melodic, mainly keyboard-driven, with occasional insertion of acoustic and electronic sounds. The new EP can be purchased at band's homepage.

The music of Crix Crax Crux could be described as experimental/indie rock that has some influences from Violent Femmes and David Bowie but has it's own flavor and is certainly worth a try. The band is under Frigital Records independant label. The two songs are presented from the upcoming release Mountainears.
