Live Reggae: Bob Marley + Peter Tosh

Reggae's most transcendent and iconic figure, Bob Marley was the first Jamaican artist to achieve international superstardom, in the process introducing the music of his native island nation to the far-flung corners of the globe. Marley's music gave voice to the day-to-day struggles of the Jamaican experience, vividly capturing not only the plight of the country's impoverished and oppressed but also the devout spirituality that remains their source of strength. His songs of faith, devotion, and revolution created a legacy that continues to live on not only through the music of his extended family but also through generations of artists the world over touched by his genius.

Bob Marley - Live In Pittsburgh 9-23-80

Singer, musician, composer, and rebel Peter Tosh cut a swathe through the Jamaican musical scene, both as a founding member of the Wailers and as a solo artist. He toured with the Rolling Stones and had an international hit with a duet with Mick Jagger, then toured again to equally rapturous world audiences as the headlining act. His words would cause an uproar at the One Peace concert, but then unlike fellow Wailer Bob Marley, Tosh always made his true feelings known.

Bootlegs: Pearl Jam, Elliott Smith

Folk-punk singer/songwriter Elliott Smith rose from indie obscurity to mainstream success in 1997 on the strength of "Miss Misery," his Academy Award-nominated song from the film Good Will Hunting. A native of Portland, OR, Smith began writing and recording his first songs at age 14, later becoming a fixture of the city's thriving music scene; as a member of the band Heatmiser, he debuted in 1993 with the LP Dead Air, issuing his first solo effort Roman Candle on the tiny Cavity Search label a year later. For his 1995 self-titled album, Smith signed with the noted Kill Rock Stars label; Either/Or followed in 1997, around the same time that filmmaker and longtime fan Gus Van Sant requested permission to use the singer's music in his upcoming Good Will Hunting. Smith also composed a handful of new songs for the soundtrack, among them "Miss Misery," and when the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced its Oscar nominations the following February, the track was a surprise entry in the Best Original Song category. Although he did not win, Smith performed the song live at the televised Oscar broadcast, appearing on-stage alongside superstars Trisha Yearwood and eventual award-winner Celine Dion in one of the most notably surreal musical moments in recent memory. Smith's DreamWorks label debut, XO, followed later in 1998. Two years later he delivered Figure 8, which indulged in lush arrangements and orchestrations more so than any of his previous solo efforts. For the next two years, Smith labored over what was to be his next album, From a Basement on a Hill. He would not live to see its completion, however -- to the shock of friends and fans alike, Smith took his own life on October 21, 2003. The record was released two days shy of the first anniversary of his death.

Pearl Jam is a Seattle-based rock band, who are considered to be one of the most popular and influential artists of the 1990s. They, along with Nirvana, Soundgarden, and Alice in Chains, helped popularize the Grunge movement of the early 90's. Moreover, they are also the only Grunge band that has remained active since the atrophy of their aforementioned contemporaries, despite the band's abandonment of their early sound to favour an ever evolving one that defies categorization.

Neutral Milk Hotel - Live In New Zeland 2001

The self-described "fuzz-folk" project Neutral Milk Hotel was one of the primary outgrowths of the Elephant 6 Recording Company collective, a coterie of like-minded, lo-fi indie groups -- including the Apples (in stereo), the Olivia Tremor Control and Secret Square -- who shared musicians, ideas, and sensibilities. While ranging in sound and concept from solo acoustic work to full band performances, Neutral Milk Hotel essentially remained the work of Jeff Mangum, a singer/songwriter from the remote town of Ruston, LA. Ruston was also home to Robert Schneider (later of the Apples), as well as William Cullen Hart and Bill Doss (who formed the Olivia Tremor Control); throughout high school, the aspiring musicians -- all influenced by the likes of the Beatles, the Beach Boys, the Zombies, Pink Floyd, and Sonic Youth -- exchanged home recordings and played in each other's bands.

Neutral Milk Hotel first took shape in 1989 as a noise rock trio that played its debut gig at a local laundromat; a year later, Mangum, Hart, and Doss moved to Athens, GA, to form the group Cranberry Life Cycle, which later became Synthetic Flying Machine (and ultimately the Olivia Tremor Control) after Mangum's departure. In 1993, he and Schneider relocated to Denver, CO, where Schneider soon founded the Apples (in stereo). Eventually, Mangum gravitated to New York and resumed recording under the Neutral Milk Hotel aegis. After a series of singles and privately released cassettes, including Invent Yourself a Shortcake, Beauty, and Hype City, Mangum travelled back to Denver to record the critically acclaimed 1996 album On Avery Island on Schneider's four-track machine; in the the spring of 1997 he again returned to Colorado to begin work on the follow-up, the brilliant In the Aeroplane Over the Sea.
The presented is the last known live show performed by NMH. It took place in Kings Arms Club, Auckland, New Zeland, in 2001. It includes also the cover of John Lennon's song Mother. For more information on Jeff Mangum and NMH check this fansite. There you can find informations on the project (i already wrote about) called Fanfare for NMH, Vol.2, featuring 20 NMH covers by fans for fans. Enjoy.

Bootlegs: SOAD, Metallica, Velvet Revolver, Robert Plant

Like many late-'90s metal bands, System of a Down struck a balance between '80s underground thrash metal and metallic early-'90s alternative rockers like Jane's Addiction. Their dark, neo-gothic alternative metal earned a cult following in the wake of the popularity of such likeminded bands as Korn and the Deftones.

http://bransoul.free.fr/bootlegs/Souls%202004/
http://bransoul.free.fr/bootlegs/Leeds%202003/

Metallica was easily the best, most influential heavy metal band of the '80s, responsible for bringing the music back to Earth. Instead of playing the usual rock star games of metal stars of the early '80s, the band looked and talked like they were from the street. Metallica expanded the limits of thrash, using speed and volume not for their own sake, but to enhance their intricately structured compositions.

Velvet Revolver began with a spring 2002 jam session that reunited ex-Guns N' Roses bandmates Slash (guitar), Duff McKagan (bass), and Matt Sorum (drums) on-stage. With the discovery that their chemistry was still going strong, the trio began pushing around some new music and auditioning singers for what became known as "The Project." Early entries included ex-Buckcherry shouter Josh Todd, and Neurotica's Kelly Shaefer; both became acquainted with the cutting room floor. By early 2003, "The Project"'s existence -- and its quest for a singer -- was common knowledge, so much so that VH1 sent cameras to document the search. Dave Kushner (Wasted Youth; Dave Navarro) also joined up as second guitarist. Troubled STP-er Scott Weiland came on board next. He and the band clicked immediately, and recorded a hyper piece of glitter metal for the Hulk soundtrack called "Set Me Free." By June, "The Project" had been renamed Velvet Revolver, and Weiland was officially made its lead singer, though possession charges stemming from a May bust were still outstanding.

In 1968, a naive young singer from the Black Country hills in England named Robert Plant was discovered wailing the blues by veteran session guitarist Jimmy Page and bassist/keyboardist John Paul Jones. When Plant recommended his friend John Bonham as the drummer, one of the most successful bands in rock history was born as Led Zeppelin. But the group that started with such force also ended in flames after 12 years, as Bonham's death from alcohol poisoning in 1980 split the band after nine albums.

Wilco - Live

Wilco specialize in approximating Americana backdrops, orchestral pop-like arrangements, and the ability to teeter back and fall apart during a song, only to catch themselves and pull it all together by the end. Following the 1994 breakup of Alternative Country pioneers Uncle Tupelo, co-founder Jeff Tweedy formed Wilco and recorded the rootsy A.M. album. Being There took Wilco's sound to heartfelt and cerebral depths, while Mermaid Avenue, an album of Woody Guthrie lyrics for which the band (and Billy Bragg) wrote music, earned them a Grammy nomination. In 1999, Summer Teeth found Wilco running towards a sunny, West Coast-inspired pop utopia of complex introspection. Wilco's endearing characteristics remain consistent through each of their recordings as Tweedy's raspy vocals sometimes sound like a pubescent boy's voice changing, while on other songs he affects a more groggy and hungover inflection. Upon recording their fourth album, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot the band parted ways with founding member and guitar player Jay Bennett (the big, white guy with the David Pirneresque dreadlocks). Then for a long time, nothing happened (their album was shelved by The Man). The band later bought the tapes of this adventurous album from Warner/Reprise for $50,000 and released it on a smaller (and obviously much cooler) label. It is with this fourth album that Wilco succeeds at leaving Alt Country geekyness (and Alt Country geeks) behind to sojourn into more moody, dislocated songwriting that blends deconstructed Power Pop with an almost Radioheadesque sparseness, all tangled up inside sonic noise experiments and amputated guitar leads. The presented is a Wilco's live concert from 2005 held at 9:30 Club in Washington.

Sublime - Live

Formed in Long Beach, CA, in 1988 as a garage punk band, Sublime grew to fame in the mid-'90s on the back of the Cali punk explosion engendered by Green Day and the Offspring, though Sublime mixed up their punk rage with reggae and ska influences. The band released just two albums during its first seven years, finally finding a hit with its self-titled third one. It was Sublime's last, however, as lead singer Brad Nowell died in May 1996, just two months before the album's release. The presented is a live concert from Sublime's Warped Tour.

Bob Dylan Live In San Jose

Bob Dylan's influence on popular music is incalculable. As a songwriter, he pioneered several different schools of pop songwriting, from confessional singer/songwriter to winding, hallucinatory, stream-of-conscious narratives. As a vocalist, he broke down the notions that in order to perform, a singer had to have a conventionally good voice, thereby redefining the role of vocalist in popular music. As a musician, he sparked several genres of pop music, including electrified folk-rock and country-rock. The presented is Dylan's San Jose live concert from 1992.

Devendra Banhart Live on KCRW

A graduate of the San Francisco Art Institute, Devendra Banhart always used art as his means of communicating. Whether through poetry, painting or music, the artist's talent is only surpassed by his eclectic nature. After meeting Bill Berkson, who became a trusted friend and inspiration to Banhart, the young talent would often record songs on shoddy and sometimes broken four-track cassette recorders. The tracks, which sometimes clocked under one minute, were not meant for the outside world and were more stream-of-conscious. But after hearing these tracks, friends began persuading him to make his songs open to a larger audience. After sending out demo cassettes, which were enclosed with a marble and shipped in stationary from the French Treasury Department, Banhart was discovered by Young God Records founder Michael Gira. After thinking of producing Banhart in the proper studio environment, Gira decided to let the songs speak for themselves unaltered. In October 2002, Banhart released his debut album, Oh My Oh My on Young God Records. An EP (Black Babies) arrived in 2003, followed by the acclaimed full-length Rejoicing in the Hands. The latter made many a critic's top ten list, resulting in the quick release of its companion piece Nino Rojo. Cripple Crow followed in September of 2005. His vocals have been compared to Nick Drake, Daniel Johnston and even Tiny Tim. He has performed with Smog and has appeared at numerous lauded venues such as New York's CBGBs. He is also the author of The Thumbs Touch Too Much. The presented is Devendra Banhart live appearance at KCRW from 05.05.2004.

Rare Suede

Suede kick started the Britpop revolution of the '90s, bringing English indie pop/rock music away from the swirling layers of shoegazing and dance-pop fusions of Madchester, and reinstating such conventions of British pop as mystique and the three-minute single. Before the band had even released a single, the U.K. weekly music press was proclaiming them as the "Best New Band in Britain," but Suede managed to survive their heavy hype due to the songwriting team of vocalist Brett Anderson and guitarist Bernard Butler. Equally inspired by the glam crunch of David Bowie and the romantic bed-sit pop of the Smiths, Anderson and Butler developed a sweeping, guitar-heavy sound that was darkly sensual, sexually ambiguous, melodic, and unabashedly ambitious. The presented are some rare tracks from Suede.

White Stripes Live on KCRW

The White Stripes are Detroit minimalist rock duo (specifically, southwest Detroit minimalist rock duo) -- Jack White, guitar and vocals, Meg White, drums -- formed in 1997 (Bastille Day, to be precise) with the idea of making simple rock & roll music. From the red and white peppermint candy motif of their debut singles, self-titled album, and stage show to their on-the-surface rudimentary style, they succeeded wildly and immediately with that mission. The presented is a White Stripes apperiance at KCRW. Provided link contains some studio recordings of Antony & The Johnsons and the music from some other artists as well.

Depeche Mode B-Sides

Originally a product of Britain's new romantic movement, Depeche Mode went on to become the quintessential electro-pop band of the 1980s; one of the first acts to establish a musical identity based completely around the use of synthesizers, the group began their existence as a bouncy dance-pop outfit but gradually developed a darker, more dramatic sound which ultimately positioned them as one of the most successful alternative bands of their era. The presented is a collection of Depeche Mode B-Sides.

Antony & The Johnsons Win Mercury Prize

Antony and the Johnsons have won the 2005 Nationwide Mercury Prize with their album ‘I Am A Bird Now’. New York-based but English born frontman Antony Hegarty was declared winner at the ceremony at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London. Reacting to the win, Hegarty said: "I think they must have made a mistake. I am completely overwhelmed. I think that's insane. It's kind of like a crazy contest between an orange and a spaceship and a potted plant and a spoon - which one do you like better?"
Congratulations to Antony, he deserved it.

The Prodigy Remixed

The Prodigy navigated the high-wire, balancing artistic merit and mainstream visibility with more flair than any electronica act of the 1990s. Ably defeating the image-unconscious attitude of most electronic artists in favor of a focus on nominal frontman Keith Flint, the group crossed over to the mainstream of pop music with an incendiary live experience that approximated the original atmosphere of the British rave scene even while leaning uncomfortably close to arena-rock showmanship and punk theatrics. The presented online album features unofficial remixes and mash-ups by some of the UK's best bootleggers, giving you a chance to hear the Prodigy's new album as you've never heard it before.
