The Fratellis

Glasgow's the Fratellis feature Jon Fratelli (vocals/guitar), Mince Fratelli (drums/vocals), and Barry Fratelli (bass). The witty indie rock trio, who formed in early 2005, maintain that their moniker is merely an homage to Barry's original surname, however other rumors suggest that the Fratellis borrowed it from the nemesis featured in Steven Spielberg film, The Goonies. Such trivia only added to the Fratellis growing appeal upon their performance debut in March 2005. Their limited-edition self-titled EP arrived a month later and sold out quickly thanks to "Creepin Up the Backstairs." The acoustic-driven tune, which is a little T. Rex, landed in regular rotation on Zane Lowe's Radio One program, and appearances on Later with Jools Holland and Top of the Pops followed in early summer. Second single "Henrietta" earned the Fratellis their first U.K. Top 20 hit. Third single "Chelsea Dagger" was burning up the U.K. Top 40 by August. In September 2006, the Fratellis have released their debut album "Costello Music". Recommended for all fans of The Strokes, The Libertines, etc.

Elf Power

The Athens, GA-based Elf Power emerged as part of the second wave of bands linked to the Elephant 6 Recording Company collective, a coterie of like-minded, lo-fi indie groups -- including the Apples (In Stereo), Neutral Milk Hotel, and the Olivia Tremor Control -- who shared musicians, ideas, and sensibilities. Formed by singers/multi-instrumentalists Andrew Rieger and Laura Carter, Elf Power debuted in 1995 with the self-released Vainly Clutching at Phantom Limbs, followed a year later by the Winter Hawk EP, which heralded the additions of bassist Bryan Helium and drummer Aaron Wegelin. The excellent When the Red King Comes appeared in late 1997, and two years later the group returned with A Dream in Sound; also in the spring of 1999, a series of live dates with the Olivia Tremor Control yielded the tour-exclusive EP Come On. Winter Is Coming followed a year later. In 2002, the group released the conceptual record Creatures (which saw the amicable departure of bassist Bryan Helium) and Nothing's Going to Happen, a collection of covers ranging from Gary Numan to the Misfits. Two years later, the group returned with Walking with the Beggar Boys, a decidedly more straightforward offering that included new members Eric Harris (formerly of the Olivia Tremor Control) and Craig McQuiston (formerly of the Glands). After switching to Rykodisc, Elf Power issued their eighth album, Back to the Web, in 2006.

Silver Jews - Live

Silver Jews (also known as Silver Joos) are an indie rock group, formed in 1989 by writer David Berman along with Pavement's Stephen Malkmus and Bob Nastanovich. Sometimes regarded as a Pavement side project (Pavement drummer Steve West has also been a member of the band), in fact "The Joos" were formed before Pavement, and 1996's The Natural Bridge featured none of the Pavement musicians, offering listeners a quieter folk album without the inimitable influence of Stephen Malkmus' guitar and vocals. The Silver Jews were always a conduit for David Berman's brand of sardonic, countrified indie rock, and Berman has remained the only constant member. The band has gone on to release several full-length albums, including the latest Tanglewood Numbers, released on October 18, 2005 (Drag City). Berman's sophisticated lyrics have come to dominate the band's music and critical reputation. Berman had long been steadfast in his almost complete refusal to play live, and so surprised the indie world when he announced their first ever tour in the spring of 2006.

News

The Killers have joined this year's race to be Christmas No 1 by releasing a brand new festive track. The Las Vegas band will release A Great Big Sleigh, although it is expected only to be available as a download. Speaking to NME, frontman Brandon Flowers explained exactly what got him in the Christmas spirit. "There are some great Christmas tunes that have been recorded over the years from the likes of George Michael (in Wham!) and John Lennon. "Sometimes you forget. You get so caught up in business and being an adult that you forget to have fun and enjoy things and be nice to people." A Great Big Sleigh is out on December 5 ...

Graham Coxon has revealed he would consider rejoining Blur. The guitarist quit the band in 2002 reports NME.com. Coxon is considering rejoining the group after Alex James said he wanted the band to make one more album as a four-piece. He said: "I haven't been approached about it. I think about it: would it be fun? Would it be a bit too scary? What would the dynamic be in a studio? Would I have to do promotion? Would I tour? You know, it's a lot of thinking. "So I guess I still mull around and think about it every now and then." Coxon insisted he is still friendly with his former bandmates. He added: "Alex will always be my friend. I guess they all will be in some way, but it's somewhat strange." ...

Explosions in the Sky will break a four-year silence early next year. The act's All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone hits stores Feb. 20. To help give indie retailers a boost, the band's set to release a deluxe edition that comes with a bonus remix disc, with the likes of Jesu and The Paper Chase reworking the album tracks. To whip up the return after such a long absence, Explosions in the Sky teamed with producer John Congleton (Mountain Goats) at Minnesota's Pachyderm studios ...

Eisley's set to get a little help from outside the family on its next album. The band, which calls on a slew of sisters, brothers and cousins from the DuPree family (it's made up of guitarist Chauntelle, singer/guitarist Sherri, keyboardist/singer Stacy, drummer Weston and bassist Garron), taps former Oingo Boingo keyboardist and producer Richard Gibbs for a bit of non-bloodline input for its next dreampop effort. The outfit's battened down in Gibbs' The Woodshed studio to work on its second effort for Reprise Records. A title or release date hasn't been settled upon yet ...

The former Husker Du singer/guitarist, Bob Mould, is well on his way to finishing off another solo album, according to Billboard. Mould joined with producer Brendan Canty (Fugazi, Lois Maffeo) to work on the still-untitled follow-up to last year's Body of Song (Yep Roc). He's yet to settle on the label to release the record ...

LCD Soundsystem will bring its second full-length into stores in March. The band, the project of the DFA's James Murphy, will drop Sound of Silver March 20 from Capitol Records. The nine-song set follows up its 2005 self-titled debut (EMI) ...

Ghosty

Ghosty was born in a music venue in Lawrence, Kansas where guitarist / vocalist / songwriter Andrew Connor met drummer / guitarist / songwriter Richard Gintowt while they were both attending a concert. They forged a bond chatting about music (surprise!) and started practicing and performing as a duo in the fall 1999. As they collaborated more and more, their path started to transform from a "dueling acoustic singer / songwriters" sound to the context of a rock band. Gintowt found himself on full time drum duty while Connor supplied the vocals and guitar, and both searched for a bassist to provide a connecting balance. By the summer of 2000, still no bassist had stepped in, so Connor trekked back home to South Dakota and recorded his debut EP, Nineteen Now, Always while Gintowt recorded parts of what was to become his album Self Help Songs released under the pseudonym OK Jones. When they reconvened at the University of Kansas in the fall of 2000, Connor and Gintowt wrangled in the talents of Mark Hurst for the bassist vacancy, but Hurst only lasted until December of that year forcing the band back to square one. Ghosty didn't return as a full-on rock unit until April of 2001 when they enlisted guitarist Jacob Baum to fill the low-end void. Baum purchased a bass and left behind the world of treble for a slot in the rhythm section and, in the fall of 2001, the trio went on to record The Five Short Minutes EP with Baum acting as the engineer. After The Five Short Minutes EP was released in 2002, Ghosty continued to grow together, wrote more songs, and the decision was made to put together another EP, this time recorded with Mike Mogis, a producer and engineer who's worked with the likes of Bright Eyes and Lullaby For the Working Class. Ghosty invited along their pals from Son, Ambulance for some musical support and in a weekend they cut Three Pop Songs. Son, Ambulance subsequently invited Ghosty out on the road for a quick jaunt through the midwest and Connor and Gintowt returned the favor by offering their services in the Son, Ambulance line up. In November of 2002, just after coming home from the tour, Ghosty expanded their sonic textures by bringing aboard keyboardist David Wetzel. In 2005, the band recorded the full-length Grow Up Or Sleep In. 2006 welcomes a new release from Ghosty. The album will be titled Nothing Is and is about to be released until the end of the year. Recommended!

Mogwai - Live

The cosmic post-rock band Mogwai was formed in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1996 by guitarist/vocalist Stuart Braithwaite, guitarist Dominic Aitchison, and drummer Martin Bulloch, longtime friends with the goal of creating "serious guitar music." Toward that end they added another guitarist, John Cummings, before debuting in March 1996 with the single "Tuner," a rarity in the Mogwai discography for its prominent vocals; the follow-up, a split single with Dweeb titled "Angels vs. Aliens," landed in the Top Ten on the British indie charts. Following appearances on a series of compilations, Mogwai returned later in the year with the 7" "Summer"; after another early 1997 single, "New Paths to Helicon," they issued Ten Rapid, a collection of their earliest material.

Around the time of recording the superb 1997 EP 4 Satin, former Teenage Fanclub and Telstar Ponies member Brendan O'Hare joined the lineup in time to record Mogwai's debut studio LP, Mogwai Young Team, exiting a short time later to return to his primary projects, Macrocosmica and Fiend. Again a quartet, Mogwai next issued 1998's Kicking a Dead Pig, a two-disc remix collection; the No Education = No Future (Fuck the Curfew) EP appeared a few months later. In 1999, they released Come On Die Young. Rock Action arrived in early 2001. Late that year, Mogwai released the My Father, My King EP; two years later, they issued the ironically titled Happy Songs for Happy People. Government Commissions: BBC Sessions 1996-2004 arrived early in 2005. Mr. Beast, which was released in 2006, found the band going in a softer, more reflective direction. In 2006, Mogwai recorded the soundtrack for the documentary Zidane A 21st Century Portrait.

Under Byen

Denmark's Under Byen (pronounced Oh'nah-Boon) features Henriette Sennenvaldt (vocals), Stine Sørensen (drums), Sara Saxild (bass), Nils Grøndahl (violin), Morten Larsen (drums), Anders Stochholm (kalimba), Morten Svenstrup (cello), and Thorbjørn Krogshede (piano). The experimental electronic collective came together in 1995 and spent the next few years shaping a hypnotic sound that's similar to Sigur Rós and Björk. It wasn't long until Under Byen took their homeland by storm, and in 1998 they became the first act signed to the Danish indie imprint have a cigar. Their stunning debut album, Kyst, was warmly received and earned several Danish music awards, including best Danish band. Their 2002 sophomore release, Det Er Mig Der Holder Træerne Sammen, made its way overseas; both Rolling Stone's David Fricke and the BBC's John Peel praised Under Byen for their unique, mesmerizing compositions. Stateside music fans were reintroduced to Under Byen upon the release of their third album, Samme Stof Som Stof. European tour dates coincided with the Paper Bag album release in fall 2006.

!Forward, Russia!

Tom Woodhead (vocals/synth), Rob Canning (bass), Katie Nicholls (drums), and Whiskas (guitar) create the angst-ridden post-punk-inspired sound of ¡Forward, Russia! Formerly of Black Helicopters, Canning and Woodhead joined siblings Nicholls and Whiskas in their native Leeds, England, in 2004 to form the indie rock quartet and their own label, Dance to the Radio. ¡Forward, Russia! toured the U.K. incessantly during their first year together while also issuing their debut, a split single with This Et Al, in spring 2005. "Nine" sold out in just one week and BBC Radio 1 DJ Steve Lamacq immediately hyped ¡Forward, Russia!'s frantic energy on his 6 Music station. "Thirteen/Fourteen" followed in August and did equally well, but ¡Forward, Russia! landed in the U.K. Top 40 with "Twelve" and the "Nine" reissue in early 2006. That spring, ¡Forward, Russia! joined the Automatic, the Long Blondes, Howling Bells, and Boy Kill Boy for the NME New Music Tour. Give Me a Wall marked their LP debut in May; its stateside release for Mute followed in September.

!Forward, Russia! delivers pretty amazing sound loaded with an incredible amount of energy. It's Highly Recommended!

The Low Frequency In Stereo

The Low Frequency in Stereo, from Haugesund , Norway , are called the band with one foot in Pompeii and one in Space.

The music are based on groovy drums, heavy organic bass, an old living-room organ, Fender Rhodes and a knife-sharp guitar which is all together making timeless music which can remind the listener from everything between Can, Stereolab, The Jesus And Mary Chain and The Doors. Low Frequency in Stereo are making music that sounds fresh, inspired and focused. Some call it Lo-Fi Post-Rock some just talks about the unique Low Frequency in Stereo sound.

After several European tours and big festivals, the band are looking forward to conquer more fans in 2006. The band has just released the EP Astro-Kopp to great reviews and have just recorded their 3 rd album called The Last Temptation Of... The Low Frequency in Stereo which is an album recorded on analogue equipment to get the classic room sound and mixed down on digital sound to keep the natural sounds on the mood and instruments. It is released in the US on the October 31th. The band say it`s the best album they have recorded and the rumours says that this album is going to be the major break through for the band. The band has recorded the album with Anders Møller “Euroboys” in his Crystal Canyon Studio in Oslo, Norway. Recommended!

Memphis

Torquil Campbell and Chris Dumont create the mesmerizing experimental sounds of Memphis. Dumont, a North Carolina native, met Campbell while working in New York City in the early '90s. Both had formed a band with fellow Canucks Chris Seligman, James Shaw, and Adam Marvy. The stint was short-lived, for Seligman and Campbell went on to form Stars while Shaw connected with Emily Haines for the synth pop outfit Metric. In summer 2002, while vacationing in Campbell's hometown of Vancouver, Dumont and his longtime friend finally put their creative ideas to paper; thus, the intricate jazz-influenced tinkerings of Memphis were born. The A Good Day Sailing EP marked the Canadian-American duo's debut that same year. Two years later, the lush pop illustrations of I Dreamed We Fell Apart arrived on the Toronto-based imprint Paper Bag. For 2006's A Little Place in the Wilderness, Memphis showcased a more relaxed, acoustic guitar-based sound; it marked their first release for Good Fences and featured additional instrumentation from Shaw (bass/trumpet), Erik Hove (saxophone), and Jon Hyde (pedal steel guitar).

A Little Place In The Wilderness was recorded in a Vancouver hotel room and at Studio Plateau in Montreal in the depths of winter – which may explain its many references to snow. The album’s first track ‘I Dreamed We Fell Apart,’ is ghostly and hypnotic with its references to winding country roads, dreams and time’s velocity. The song is also an appropriate introduction to a record about ghosts, dreams and the wilderness of the heart. With gentle horns and strings that swell in almost every track, A Little Place In The Wilderness is evocative of innocence and the sprawling daydreams of childhood. Dreamy and foreboding, it is an intricate record from a South-meets-North duo that is the ideal soundtrack to finding a peaceful place amid chaos. Recommended!

The Subjects

The Subjects are a band comprised of two teachers and two former students from a Manhattan high school. After forming to play a school carnival in 2004 they realized a common goal of making music. They quickly got their act together and played shows around New York. The Subjects recorded the EP after a tour spanning from Michigan to Boston. The EP was recorded on a four-track cassette machine in a weekend. It is self-released. The follow-up release LP is in production and is slated for a winter release. The forthcoming album is named 'With The Ease, Grace, Precision, and Cleverness of Human Beings' and is expected to be released in February 2007.

The album exhibits just the type of mature songcraft and naïve exuberance that a student-teacher pairing would suggest. “Hounds of War” showcases the band's ability to combine strong melodies with shifting dynamics and undertones of longing and emotional depth. “Best of Us” shows the band going beyond guitar-bass-drum arrangements, with its dense combination of horns, organs and layered percussion. “Icicles” is built off of a powerful riff and finds the band in a more spontaneous mode, with call-and-response interplay between the instruments. What emerges is a record that moves from well-crafted, high-energy moments to quiet expressions of subtle eloquence. Reckless and insightful, with the ease grace precision and cleverness of human beings is a delicate combination of youth's wide-eyed optimism and the experience of age.

My Chemical Romance say they might turn their album, The Black Parade, into a musical. Frontman, Gerard Way told NME: "I think (The Black Parade) needs to be something. "If not a play then a musical. It's such a visual thing. I think it would make a great animated film, something experimental would really work for this." He also added: "It'd also be really interesting to rewrite the script so when you make it into a movie it should be something almost totally different. "It would be cool to maybe play with the notions of what you're making than just simply tell the story." The Black Parade is currently at No 2 in the UK album chart, behind Robbie Williams' Rudebox ...

Wolf Parade - Live In Montreal

Canadian indie pop combo Wolf Parade formed in 2003 in Montreal, where their first show was opening for the Arcade Fire. From there Dan Boeckner, Spencer Krug, Hadji Bakara, and Arlen Thompson recorded and self-released a four-song EP, and followed that with a six-song recording in 2004. They eventually gained the attention of Isaac Brock, and the Modest Mouse impresario then brought Wolf Parade to Sub Pop. (Brock's band was also a stylistic touchstone.) In July 2005 the quartet issued a self-titled EP on the label by way of introduction; their debut full-length, Apologies to the Queen Mary, followed in September. It was one of that autumn's more anticipated releases, recorded as it was with Brock's help and released amid a critical flurry for Canadian bands like Broken Social Scene, the Most Serene Republic, and Stars.

The presented is a live concert from 2005, that took place in Montreal's Plaza Theatre. Enjoy!
