With his heartfelt, melodic songs influenced by everything from 80's British New Wave to 70's Folk, Nashville native Cary Brothers has achieved critical and commercial success with his independent releases "All The Rage" and "Waiting For Your Letter," both of which hit the top of the iTunes Folk charts. "Blue Eyes" has been downloaded over 20,000 times and broke the Top Fifty on the iTunes singles chart. On the web, Brothers has found tremendous success on MySpace, where he has over 800,000 plays on his music page.
Cary's songs have appeared on the NBC sitcom "Scrubs," the FOX mystery "Bones," WB's "Smallville," and the successful medical dramas "Grey's Anatomy" and "ER." Brothers' lyrical ballad "Blue Eyes" was featured on the Platinum selling, Grammy winning soundtrack to the hit indie film "Garden State." This fall, Brothers' song "Ride" will appear on the soundtrack to the feature film "The Last Kiss," starring Zach Braff, Rachel Bilson, and Casey Affleck. Brothers has also performed on the CBS "Late, Late Show" and "Scrubs."
Cary found his musical voice playing regularly as part of the talented musical community at the Hotel Cafe in Los Angeles, and he has since brought his tremendous live show across America and Canada, touring with such acts as Liz Phair, KT Tunstall, Aqualung, Imogen Heap, and The Fray.
On 27th of May, Cary Brothers released debut album titled 'Who You Are'. Featured on the Grammy winning "Garden State" soundtrack, Cary Brothers continues to achieve critical success with his new album, which showcases passionate vocals and the kind of melodies that resonate in your head for days. Jeremy consists of Lars Christian Olsen (age 19) and Øivind Hatleskog (age 21). Both born and raised in the Norwegian oil-town Stavanger, the two veloursuited fellows make arrangements together with their band that span from the utterly pompous to low-key. They mostly find their inspiration in three pop genres, namely power-pop such as Belle & Sebastian, Big Star and The Beach Boys, folk-pop artists like Simon & Garfunkel and Bob Dylan and as they call it sing-a-long pop with groups like the Beatles, The Byrds and The Monkees.
In their brief careerspan of 3 years playing together, Jeremy has already had the privilege of sharing stages with artists such as Sondre Lerche and Thomas Dybdahl, and playing the norwegian equivalent of Popkomm and SXSW- by:Larm 06. Last fall they released their EP in Norway, and in January it also reached the stores of Japan where it also received good reviews. Jeremy signed with US label Hitswitch Records, who will be releasing the EP on May 29.
They are currently recording an album with reknown producer HP Gundersen, also known for producing the likes of Sondre Lerche. A new single "Make Love Not War" from those recording sessions will be released digitally May 21st in the world except in the US and Canada where the single will be released on June 19th. The single will also be released on limited red vinyl 7", backed by a remixed from Andre Allen Anjos who has done remixes for Bloc Party, The Shins, Tokyo Police Club, CSS, etc.

Tenderhooks is a lyrical country-rock band with a progressive bent, hailing from Knoxville, TN’s eclectic music scene. Known for their energetic live shows, Tenderhooks’ literate, witty wordplay and inventive melodicism is complimented by crunchy riffs and idiosyncratic guitar work. Add into the mix beautiful harmony vocals and a flair for melody and the end result is nothing short of fantastic.
The band released self-titled EP in 2006. The debut LP 'Vidalia' is released in April 2007 on independent label Rock Snob Records. This record was produced by Don Coffey from Superdrag, who knows a thing or two about power-pop. Tenderhooks are jammin' BONNAROO, too, which is pretty indicative of the hype surrounding them in the Southeast. Recommended!

John P. Strohm was born to an academic family in the Big Ten town of Bloomington, Indiana. After playing drums in the punk scene there, Strohm relocated to Boston and soon switched to guitar. His then-girlfriend and drummer Freda Love joined him and, upon meeting guitarist Juliana Hatfield, the three formed the Blake Babies, one of the heavy players on the bubbling Boston pop scene that also included the Lemonheads, Dumptruck, Buffalo Tom and the Pixies. He was also in the Lemonheads at this point, serving as the band’s drummer, appearing on the Lick album after producing the band’s earlier Creator LP. Lemonheads front man Evan Dando moonlighted with the Blake Babies as well.
After Blake Babies disbanded in early 1990s, John formed Antenna with Freda Boner and Jake Smith. This band also included at times Vess Ruhtenberg, Pat Spurgeon and Ed Ackerson. Antenna released two well-received records on Mammoth then morphed into Velo Deluxe in 1995. The band released one album Superelastic on Mammoth Records and brok up in 1996. Meanwhile John had formed a country outfit called The Hello Strangers with Mitch Harris, Glenn Hicks and other Beantown regulars. John P. Strohm and the Hello Strangers released the twangy Caledonia on Flat Earth records. In the late 1990s, John toured as a guitarist with the Lemonheads as well as reunited with the Blake Babies to tour and release an album God Bless the Blake Babies. He also left Bloomington around this time to move to Birmingham, AL to pursue a law degree and start a family with wife, Heather. Birmingham’s Vestavia became the subject of his 1998 solo album, Vestavia. John has also appeared on records by Polara and Mike Watt.
John P. Strohm is returning with his first LP in eight years, Everyday Life. Superphonic Records is handling the release duties on July 10, 2007. Everyday Life is a tuneful collection of twangy guitar rock that takes time for pensive moments while retaining a twinge of Strohm’s punk rock/college rock past with spry tempos and driving arrangements. Everyday Life continues on the same path set forth in Vestavia, one of contemplative songcraft, catchy rockers, and a gentle kiss of twang, though his punk and college rock pasts is not totally absent, as evidenced by some of the more fleet-of-foot tracks on the album, like crunchy opener “Sha La”.
Strohm graduated magna cum laude from the Cumberland School of Law at Birmingham’s Samford University. He currently works as a lawyer for Johnston Barton, specializing in entertainment law.

Over the past 6 years, Morningbell has developed their own brand of melodic, psychedelic rock, rooting themselves as a well established tradition in the Florida Music Scene. The band has toured the Eastern US and has played with Robert Sledge (Ben Folds Five), Holopaw (Subpop), Man Man (Ace Fu), MAE (Columbia), and Kevin Martin (Candlebox). The bands music stands up best behind their captivating live performances. Armed with an arsenal of low budge lighting effects, Morningbell not only causes the stage to erupt with sound, but with their trademarked 100 dollar light show as well.
A lot of bands give lip service to words like ambition, but Morningbell truly feels like it's onto something with its new album, Through the Belly of the Sea. The band members have done their research (one of them is a lawyer by day), and they truly feel like this is the first Choose Your Own Adventure album ever made. Based on the Choose Your Own Adventure books popular during the band members' youth, the album follows a nautical-themed tale reflected in the songs lyrics as well as the album art (I'll send you liner notes if you want!). Theoretically, the listener can listen to the LP in any number of ways (no one has taken the time to count the total numbers of paths possible!). Besides that, it's a bunch of hooky, twisty psych pop that recalls Clouds Taste Metallic-era Flaming Lips, some E6-ers, or maybe White Pepper-era Ween. Besides that, there are some serious guitar (and bass!) solos on this record. And that's just awesome. Check It Out!

Neo-post-punk quartet the Editors formed in 2003. Originally dubbed Snowfield, the group comprised singer/guitarist Tom Smith, lead guitarist Chris Urbanowicz, bassist Russell Leetch, and drummer Ed Lay, all music technology students at Britain's Stafford University who relocated to Birmingham after graduation. A series of a well-received club dates and a single demo tape earned the Editors the interest of British labels large and small, and after a bidding frenzy the group signed to a revitalized Kitchenware, the venerable British indie once home to Prefab Sprout. Kitchenware issued their debut single, "Bullets," in early January 2005 and the record sold out in one day, earning comparison to the dark, dramatic sound of contemporary bands like Interpol and Bloc Party as well as ancestors like Joy Division and Echo & the Bunnymen. The Editors' follow-up, "Munich," made them darlings of the U.K. music press, and just weeks after their standout performance at the annual Glastonbury Music Festival, the band issued its third single, "Blood." Their much-anticipated debut LP, The Back Room, followed in mid-2005. "Munich" was reissued in January 2006, placing The Back Room in the Top Five on the U.K. album chart and earning the band a gold record. A joint North American tour with stellastarr* coincided with the stateside release of The Back Room in March. A Mercury Music Prize nomination followed in July.
Editors new album, 'An End Has a Start', will be released in the UK & mainland Europe on 25 June 2007. A US release date is yet to be announced. The album will be released following first single 'Smokers Outside the Hospital Doors' on 18 June (digital available 11 June). The new song sounds amazing and gives many reasons to believe that the new album could be a highlight of the year. Highly Recommended!

Pela is an American rock & roll band. At a time when the word ‘America’ has never been more fraught with meaning, songs that speak to our basic feelings and emotions about life could never be more resonant. Lost amongst all the geo-political tumult are the stories of every day America; the aches and pains and the beautiful possibilities. Yet amidst this turmoil and uncertainty, new stories are being written and told by a new generation of American bands. Pela is clearly one of those voices.
Long based in Brooklyn, New York but hailing from the hinterlands of New York state and California, Pela are 4 working class artists who have struggled nobly to pursue their dream of making music, be it busking in the metros of New York and Europe, selling neckties in Times Square, tending dive bars, catering food, doing carpentry, working in the A/V department at a major record label or playing polka at Croatian weddings. Along the way, various members have put themselves through college, learned to play multiple instruments, studied jazz, toured Europe with other bands, lived in Africa, learned other languages, consumed a lot of beer, had some teeth knocked out and knocked out a few of their own.
Guided by the voices of Bruce Springsteen, Hubert Selby, Husker Du, Raymond Carver, The Replacements, Andre Dubus, The Pixies, Wilco, and the Hold Steady, amongst others, Pela’s brand of pastoral punk has been beautifully described as equal parts desperation and inspiration, which they have masterfully crafted into a signature sound. Their upcoming debut album, Anytown Graffiti, is a prism of songs reflecting the broken love, reckless hope, confusion, celebration, isolation, discovery, addiction, loss, small town stares and big city angst of American life through the eyes of 4 young men uncompromisingly living it. Achingly imploring melodies and infectious hooks permeate crowd favorites like “Lost to the Lonesome”, “Tenement Teeth”, and “Waiting on the Stairs”, while the near orchestral grace and detailed narrative of “Cavalry” is as uniquely compelling a composition as the fragile overture “Your Desert’s Not a Desert At All”. These are songs that Pela has spent a lifetime writing, songs for any town in New York, California, everywhere in between and beyond.
Pela has toured ambitiously in America over the past 2 years, playing in any room that would have them, and rewarding audiences with a passionate, and occasionally explosive, live show. Along the way they have shared stages with The Flaming Lips, Norah Jones, Sleater-Kinney, Mission of Burma, Devendra Banhart, The National, The Decemberists, Gomez, Rainer Maria, and others, earning a devoted and passionate following in the process. They have previously released 2 EP’s, All in Time on Brassland in 2005, which received rave reviews, and in fall 2006 self-released an iTunes-only EP, Exit Columbia Street. They are also featured in the upcoming documentary, Rockin’ Brooklyn, alongside TV on the Radio, Coco Rosie, The National, Vietnam, The Big Sleep and others, Their song “Episodes” was featured in a recent episode of the NBC TV show Scrubs, and have had several tracks licensed for compilations. Pela will be touring the world in support of their new album. Highly Recommended!

New York's Interpol reminds anyone who has ever heard post-punk bands like Joy Division and the Chameleons of those exact bands, plus a few more. The roots of the band -- as far as its members are considered -- can be traced back to a partnership between Daniel Kessler (a guitarist and vocalist) and a fellow New York University student named Greg Drudy (a drummer). Kessler struck up a friendship with another NYU student, Carlos Dengler, who had previously played guitar and felt like becoming involved with music for a second time. He took up the bass and keyboard duties. And by sheer coincidence, Kessler later bumped into Paul Banks, a guitarist/vocalist he knew from time spent in France. With the lineup settled, Interpol became a fully active band in 1998. After the band's first gigs in early 2000, Drudy vacated his position and was replaced by Sam Fogarino.
They started playing out frequently, including regular appearances at clubs in and around New York like Brownie's and the Mercury Lounge. A brief tour of the U.K. in April of 2001 was punctuated by a radio session for John Peel's BBC program; at that point, the band was touring in support of a limited-edition EP released through the Chemikal Underground label's Fukd I.D. series. (They had also appeared on a compilation that was released just prior to Fukd I.D. called Clooney Tunes for another U.K. indie, Fierce Panda.) 2001 also saw a self-released EP from the band and another compilation appearance on Arena Rock's This Is Next Year, a double-disc set of Brooklyn-area acts. Matador signed the band in 2002 and issued a three-song single and the band's debut LP (Turn on the Bright Lights) by year's end. The album made the band indie stars, and extensive touring around the world followed. Just prior to releasing their second album (Antics) in September of 2004, they opened for the Cure as part of that band's Curiosa Festival.
Their upcoming album, titled Our Love to Admire, will be released July 9, 2007 in the UK on Parlophone and July 10, 2007 in the US on Capitol Records, preceding a Japanese release on July 14. The first single from the album, "The Heinrich Maneuver," was released on May 7, 2007. Popular music magazine Billboard has described the song as "a peppy kiss-off to an ex-love now residing on the opposite coast. Recommended!

Yorkshire, England's the Cribs features three brothers: vocalists/guitarist Ryan Jarman, bassist/vocalist Gary, and drummer Ross. The trio began playing together at an early age, making their debut at a family party in the late '80s when twins Gary and Ryan were nine years old and Ross was just five. The brothers grew up with similar musical tastes, blending quintessentially British influences like the Beatles, Sex Pistols, and Smiths with American indie rock like Beat Happening and Bobby Conn. Eventually, the Cribs got to play with both Beat Happening's Calvin Johnson and Conn; Conn liked the band so much that he invited them to record with him in his Chicago studio. The Cribs released three singles, Another Number, What About Me, and You Were Always the One, before signing to Wichita Records in late 2003. The band spent 2004 readying their self-titled debut album, which was recorded in London's famed Toerag Studios, touring with the Datsuns and performing at that year's CMJ Festival. Late that year they began working on their second album with Orange Juice's Edwyn Collins as producer. The Cribs was released in the U.S. in early 2005. Later in the year, the band issued their second album The New Fellas.
The Cribs will release their new album "Men's Needs, Women's Needs, Whatever" on May 21st, LP & CD through Wichita Recordings. In North America it's released July 10th through Warner Brothers. The album is preceeded by a single "Men's Needs" out on May 14th on Ltd 2 x 7" vinyl, CD Single & Download. The video for the song made a lot of controversy. A singer/songwriter whose lush, theatrical pop harked back to the traditions of Tin Pan Alley, cabaret and even opera, Rufus Wainwright was born in 1973; the son of folk music luminaries Loudon Wainwright III and Kate McGarrigle, his parents divorced while he was a child, and he was raised by his mother in Montreal. Beginning his piano studies at age six, by thirteen he was touring with his mother, aunt Anna and his sister Martha in a group billed as the McGarrigle Sisters and Family; a year later, Wainwright was nominated for a Juno (the Canadian equivalent of a Grammy) as Most Promising Young Artist, while his "I'm A-Runnin'" was concurrently nominated for a Genie (the Canadian countepart to an Oscar) for Best Song in a Film.
Coming out as a homosexual while still in his teens, Wainwright sought solace in opera throughout his adolescent years, also becoming an enormous fan of performers including Edith Piaf, Al Jolson and Judy Garland. After attending the prestigious Millbrook School in upstate New York, he briefly studied music at Montreal's McGill University, eventually turning away from classical performance towards pop and rock. Becoming a fixture on the Montreal club circuit, Wainwright soon cut a series of demos with producer Pierre Marchand; Loudon Wainwright III then passed a copy of the tape to friend Van Dyke Parks, who in turn handed it on to DreamWorks exec Lenny Waronker. The label signed him soon after, resulting in the release of Rufus Wainwright during the spring of 1998. The album landed on several critics' "best of 1998" lists, while Wainwright spent the next few years touring and appearing sporadically on soundtracks (Shrek) and compilations (The McGarrigle Hour). His sophomore album, Poses, brought similar acclaim in mid-2001. After spending much of 2001 and 2002 touring on his own and with Tori Amos, Wainwright settled into Bearsville Studio, in Woodstock, N.Y., with producer Marius deVries to record sort of a double album. The first project Want One was released in September, 2003. Want Two followed a year later. ~Allmusic
The May 15th will see a new release from Rufus Wainwright, titled Release The Stars. Recorded in Berlin and executive produced by the Pet Shop Boys' Neil Tennant, Rufus Wainwright's fifth album offers an ounce of restraint from the man that dressed up as Sir Lancelot's crossed girlfriend Lady Shallott on the cover of his last. Well, not really. Having fallen in love and curbed his self-destructive streak, the New York-born singer-songwriter has certainly sharpened his wit on Release the Stars but the songs remain as ornate and over-the-top as ever, drawing as much inspiration from opera and the musical theater as the desire to purge personal demons. So while Wainwright spends considerable time here pondering the state of the world ("Going to a Town") and his own battles with drug and sexual addiction ("Sanssouci"), every note is punctuated by a choir, orchestral swell, or big burst of brass. It wouldn't be Rufus with anything less. Highly Recommended!

The San Francisco-based supergroup Still Flyin’ was assembled in late 2004 by singer/songwriter Sean Rawls. By the time he arrived on the West Coast he was already a veteran of several Athens, GA bands, including Masters of the Hemisphere and Je Suis France.
Still Flyin’ was originally inspired by a song written by Rawls in his time with Je Suis France. The song was titled “Never Gonna Touch the Ground,” and quickly became a live show staple and crowd favorite. After relocating to San Francisco, the song seemed to have a life of its own and demanded to be jammed. Rawls decided he needed to form a band based on that song and the dream of Still Flyin’ was born. He asked virtually everyone he knew in his new city to join the rocksteady-inspired project, and to everyone’s surprise the first practice had 15 people at it.
Soon the band was taking it’s good vibes message to the people. Using rocksteady as a starting point for their uptempo pop, without any pretension of playing “authentic reggae”, Still Flyin’ crafted upbeat and danceable jams naturally suited to the huge crowd sing-a-longs that followed. After a series of successful shows, Rawls was ready to take things to the next level. In April of 2005, Still Flyin’ organized the Mind Zap festival, an all-day party in SF’s McLaren Park featuring makeshift hot tubs, beer helmets, a mystery tent and a bar shaped like a joint....as well as performances by Still Flyin’ and scenemates Erase Errata, Okay, Je Suis France, Chicken on a Raft, and Whysp, amongst others. Following the Zap things began to take off for Still Flyin, and the band was soon on a West Coast tour opening for Architecture in Helsinki.
And what might have begun as a lighthearted nod to good times soon evolved into a large, ever-shifting international collective, boasting members of bands such as The Aislers Set, Ladybug Transistor, Love Is All, Maserati, Dear Nora, Trackstar, and many more.
But even without the stellar indie-rock pedigree, Still Flyin’ would be a force to be reckoned with. The band’s hybrid of Rocksteady and danceable pop plays out in energetic and joyfully chaotic live shows that have gotten even the most skeptical and frumpy indie rock asses shaking. The party atmosphere is infectious and their ever-shifting live lineup has included Jens Lekman as well as Isobel Knowles and Tara Shacknell (formerly of Architecture In Helsinki) plus countless others who simply couldn’t resist the jam.

Utah Carol, comprised of JinJa Davis and Grant Birkenbeuel, create an eclectic mix of pop, folk and indie rock seasoned with happy/sad, boy/girl vocal harmonies. There’s an enchanting quality to their music with lullaby-like, harmonizing vocals floating effortlessly through their songs. The band’s name comes from a traditional song about a cowboy who dies trying to save his friend from a stampede. Utah Carol have been writing songs together since 1995. JinJa and Grant write the music and lyrics as well as produce, arrange, perform and publish their songs in Chicago, Illinois. Utah Carol has three albums to date, "Wonderwheel," "Comfort for the Traveler," and now "Rodeo Queen."
Utah Carol's third incredibly beautiful full-length album release, is filled with the duo's signature rich, woven vocal harmonies combined with layered horns, keyboard, slide guitars and orchestral samples. Haunting songs like "The Golden West," "Twilight Time" and "Whisper To Me Sweetly" are perfect companions for an evening at the cabin. "Rodeo Queen" creates an expansive soundtrack for one great, lonesome western where everything is golden or sparkles like the sequins on a cowboy shirt or the stars up in a boney cowboy sky. Recommended!

The Je Suis France "vibe" can be a little hard for outsiders to figure out. This band practically redefines insularity: nine friends with ten years of inside jokes, strange nicknames (Iceberg, The Darkness, Crogers), and a mountain of good/bad/bizarre ideas (e.g. Mind Zappa, a Frank Zappa tribute EP where the band covered songs they had never heard using tabulations). In the Whimsy Dept., they give Ween a run for their money, but the band's general good-naturedness belies a real thirst for pushing the envelope of what it means to be an "indie rock" band. These are guys who get dressed up to Hall and Oates/Michael McDonald and have a party in the parking lot complete with Subway Party Sub who also count among their favorite bands Acid Mothers Temple, Robert Wyatt/Soft Machine, and the Jazz Butcher. Though it may be hard to believe, there is not an ironic or pretentious bone is these boys' bodies.
The band released self-titled debut in 2000 and the sophomore Fantastic Area in 2003. Afrikan Majik is the band's 3rd and most complete release. It's the unholy yacht rock + indie rock + krautrock amalgam that you didn't know you needed. It's filled with songs about astral planes, hammjamming, whale genitalia, and backing your friends up in a fight. Recommended!

2006 was a big year for Bishop Allen. The band recorded and self-released an EP every month of the year. Fifty-eight songs later, they completed one of the most ambitious recording projects in recent memory. Their 2003 debut, "Charm School", was a hooky indie-pop gem, but Bishop Allen's EP material proves far more sophisticated and addictive. With the EPs, Bishop Allen's pop smarts sound timeless, escaping the indie-pop idiom and revealing a language informed by the Kinks, Dylan, and the Zombies.
But it was never Bishop Allen's intent to forgo a label for the long term, and in early 2007 the band struck a partnership with Dead Oceans. The first fruit of this relationship is Bishop Allen's sophomore album, "The Broken String", Dead Ocean's inaugural release. If Bishop Allen made a huge musical jump from the 2003 debut to the 2006 EPs, the band made a quantum leap on "The Broken String". Of its 12 songs, 9 are reworked tracks from the EPs and two are previously unreleased. These are not just re-recordings: Bishop Allen has stepped out of the home studio and created definitive versions of songs that were originally conceived within the constraints of a monthly deadline. Benefiting from the earlier recordings and several tours, the songs' arrangements have grown, the production is lush, the lyrics are front and center, and the band's evolution has reached a new level. "The Broken String" is the follow-up for which Bishop Allen fans have long clamored. "The Broken String" is not just a great record by Bishop Allen standards. It is poised to be the pop soundtrack to the summer of 2007. Highly Recommended!
